Marketplace / WebDT 366 for sale
« on: June 30, 2009, 05:03:46 pm »
Hello,
I purchased a WebDT 366 when Thom had pointed them out a while back.  I didn't get much farther then turning it on, and noticing the cradle wasn't quite the correct one, before things got busy.

This unit does have a minor scratch on the screen in the upper left, I think all of the ones in that sale did..  The scratch doesn't seem to affect the operation or viewing of the device.  I haven't actually run the orbiter on the device, but being as it was in the same lot as the one used by Thom, it's likely to work.

Device has a Cisco WIFI card, and seems to have Bluetooth as well.  I have used Bluetooth PAN in order to get internet access, since my WIFI network is using WPA not WEP.

I'm selling the device, including extra external battery, charger and cradle (which isn't the correct one, but is still usable as a stand).  I'm presently asking $175 + shipping.

  Thank you.

Check out the next generation of OS for the Nokia N8x0's called Mer.  They have it running on the SmartQ5.  Then it should be a simple recompile of the maemo orbiter.

Users / Server rebuild recommendations
« on: June 05, 2009, 07:48:27 pm »
Hello,
My server's OS drive is in the process of self-destructing, so I'm going to have to do a rebuild.

I have a combination of 4 1TB drives, and 3 500GB drives.. Of which 2 1TB and 2 500GB are filled with media/other systems backups.  The OS drives are presently running on the IDE 0 channel, and I have 4 SATA II and 4 SATA (PCI Card) channels.  Only the system board channels are bootable.
What would be the recommended setup? I was thinking RAID 1 for the OS (500GB Drives) and RAID 5 for the Data (1TB Drives).  I do have a backup scheme in place for the database.  I'm mostly concerned with uptime on this rebuild.  But, I have issues with the 1/2 the storage space that Raid 1 results in.  I realize that Raid 5 has some write time performance issues as well.

Thanks

I'm selling the device, including extra external battery, charger and cradle (which isn't the correct one, but is still usable as a stand).  I'm presently asking $175 + shipping.

use the lmce directory structure, and make a symlink from a folder called tv_shows_1 on that disk, to /home/public/data/videos/tv_shows_1

please be sure to do this outside of the directory structure on the managed disk. DO NOT MESS WITH MOUNTS IN LINUXMCE. You will crash the system. The system has an extensive automounter system that will detect and mount all filesystems it finds.

i.e. say the disk is device 69

make a folder on /mnt/device/69 called tv_shows_1
then ln -s that to /home/public/data/videos

-Thom

y'know I had tried this, and I found that the link was being deleted and remade as a directory entry.  So, I just assumed that one of the automation scripts really wanted the tv_shows_1 to be a directory, and started doing things differently.

Not to recommend, but if you are looking for a Intel 945 Mini-ITX with HDMI, Jetway makes one.  It even has dual ethernet..  I have not used this board personally.

Developers / Re: Building for 0810

I already have kubuntu 0810 64 bit installed, will there be negative results for sure if I attempt the Linuxmce alpha?? Or is it possible to install 32 bit mce on top of a 64 bit kubuntu... i am thinking its impossible. Let me know guys. thanks

Do a google search for installing 32 bit apps on 64 bit ubuntu, there are documented steps that are needed to be taken in order to get the 32 bit libraries set up.  Once that is done, you can install 32 bit programs on a 64 bit ubuntu system.  Kubuntu == Ubuntu in this instance, since the steps needed are the same, don't limit your searches to just kubuntu!

That being said, as the people most familiar with LMCE have already indicated in this thread and other threads, you don't really gain anything by using 64bit compiled code for LMCE.  I didn't notice anything except more disk space required for the OS, things didn't seem to be any faster with 64bit OS vs 32bit OS.

One area of interest is the lirq database of codes. I have a ATI USB Remote Wonder that i believe just needs codes mapped for better functionality (or the documentation needs updating as I must not have configure right if there is more than just mouse control.)

I am using the ATI USB Remote Wonder presently, and except for the mouse functionality, it works mostly.  There are a few things I have in mind to change, but it is usable as is.

Installation issues / Re: Audio Issues
« on: September 20, 2008, 03:52:42 pm »
Well, this is weird...  I finally gave up on trying to understand what was going wrong, and decided to try reloading the diskless image.  After three trys it is working now..  This is very weird.  The first try, I still had stuff disabled in the web admin, the second try, I really don't know why it didn't work.  But now I just have the issue of wanting the sound to be routed out the digital and analog stereo at the same time..

Just as a note, all three trys were without applying the alsa driver updates that were necessary for my prior mythtv install.

EDIT: It's not the rebuild.  It's the UI2 vs UI1.  UI2 Static breaks..  UI1 seems to work.

So, now on to the remote...

Thanks for the assistance given, both here and on the chat line.

With regards to a WIKI about VNC in the X server..  I think that the best place would be to enhance the vncserver wiki entry with the instructions, for adding VNC to the running X server.  The current wiki references starting a new X session, and utilizing the built in kde desktop sharing.  Not sure how the kde stuff works, but, it doesn't seem to do what I did.

I didn't get a chance to mess with the audio problems last night, since one of my children had turned on the MD and shut the cabinet door, so it was really hot..  So, I decided to turn it off and let it cool down overnight.  Added another thing to my list of todo's though.  Auto sleep mode ;)

Hello,

I have a few questions.

What system board do you have?
Is it at the latest BIOS?
Does the Gyration work in all the USB ports?
Have you tried a different all the USB ports for this device?
Have you tried a different USB cable?
Have you tried hooking the device up to a different computer?
Does it work under winblows?

The outputs you give are showing a definite hardware problem of some sort.

I have the same device, and I have had issues with it on some computers, of course the computers that I have problems with it on are old, they even have problems with my USB HDs.

Hello,
Check out http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2921.0 and http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=4397.0 for similar issues, and the steps that were asked for resolution.

Steps I followed..  goto LinuxMCE Forums -> LinuxMCE,  Fill in AC3 Passthru in the Search window and click Search.  This searches all sub forums for that string anywhere in the postings.  Then you can try SPDif or Audio.

Your question actually helped me out a bit..  Gave me some more things to try with my audio problems, different search string

Can you tell me, when you fo to KDE desktop from the Orbiter (with LMCE components running), the start-up sound that KDE desktop makes as it opens, is that distorted?

I didn't actually pay attention to that....  I'll have to try, my first inclination is to say that it was distorted.

What I did to test this..
  1) I Switched off the auto start of the Media Director.
  2) ran mplayer on a long song..
        Sound good
  3) Start the Media Director
      Sound becomes distorted.
  4) Switch back to KDE using the Advanced menu.
  5) Stop the Media Director from the Launcher
Somewhere between stopping device 35, 33, 32 the sound becomes good again.
      35 is HAL
      I don't remember what 33 is.
      32 is Orbiter.

So based upon that, I disabled those devices one at a time in the web admin app and found that If I don't start the orbiter device the sound does not become distorted.

I then tried to disable the child devices of the orbiter ( mythtv, mplayer, xine, ...), but it seems that those devices don't pay attention to the disabled flag, because I always saw them running in the process status.

I tried killing the individual devices by sending a signal 15 to them, but that didn't do anything (except lock up the orbiter).

So my conclusion, is that one of the sub devices is opening the audio device, and trying to configure it based upon some setting, that I haven't been able to determine the origination of.

I have not been able to alter the behavior while the orbiter is running using alsamixer.  I also have not been able to duplicate the problem without the orbiter running.

I'm perfectly willing to concede that I might have messed up a setting in this device, however I have tried reconfiguring the diskless boot directory, and that didn't seem to make any difference, to this problem, it added a few more to my plate though, I had the ATI USB remote working, and now I have to figure out what I did again...  I had glxgears working with decent frame rate, and now it's down to 10 FPS.  But, I'd like to get this audio issue resolved before I proceed on to the next fire.

The devs did take some time to try to help a bit on the IRC channel, but didn't really have any ideas what to try next.

Thanks for any help.

BTW: would anybody be interested on a WIKI about configuring VNC in the X server..  I have found that to be of great assistance, because you can't really read the characters on the TV in KDE mode, plus overscan.  VNC isn't really great in the UI2 orbiter, but it works well for the UI1 orbiter.  It's just three lines added to the xorg.conf file, and a password file config.

I have narrowed down the problem to the start of the orbiter device (33 in my case).  If I disable that device in the web admin, the sound stays good.   So, what is the orbiter doing to me??  What should I try now?
