Yes it should be possible.  Try this:

#sudo nvidia-settings

That will launch the nvidia utility that will allow you to configure your display. It should give you the option to select any resolution that's supported by your monitor.  If you don't see 1366x768 in the list then it probably isn't supported by the interface that you are using (DVI, VGA, etc).

Once you have the display looking nice you can save the settings to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.  There's an option in the utility to save the settings to a file.  At his point you need to reboot or restart the X session. The next time you launch LMCE it may try to modify the xorg.conf to add in the missing options to support UI2.  Make you you back up your xorg.conf once you have it working

At a minimum, I'd spend $15 more and get an X2 4200.  You can never have enough CPU especially if you ever plan to add an HD card to your system.

I believe what you are seeing what is called video tearing or page tearing.  The problem occurs when your video card attempts to send a new frame before the previous frame has been drawn completely. To correct the problem you need to enable v-sync.  If you have an nvidia card then you can run nvidia-settings and check all of the boxes that reference "sync to vblank".  With these checked your video card will wait until it sees the vertical blanking signal before tries to write the new frame.  ATI cards should have a similar option.  This eliminates the tearing but it can introduce other problems.

With 1.1 I was having difficulty using "sync to vblank" with composite enabled in the xorg.conf file.  See this thread:

I'm pretty sure that composite is only a problem if you enable "sync to vblank".  The downside to disabling composite is that you can't run UI2 with alpha blending.  You are limited to UI2.  I'd be curious to hear if anyone is using UI2 wApha and "sync to vblank" enabled.  I haven't tried enabling composite with RC1 or 704 so I'm not sure if it's still a problem.

You must be trying to run UI2 with alpha blending.  To run UI2 with alpha blending you need the following:
1. Nvidia 6xxx or 7xxx series card.  ATI cards apparently don't support this.
2. You need to have the "nvidia" driver installed (NOT nv in your xorg.conf file)

If you can't get this working then drop back to using plain old UI2.  You can launch the AV wizard again by rebooting the box and holding down shift.

Go with as fast a CPU as you can afford especially if you doing HD playback.  My Athlon64 3500+ is barely enough to get smooth 1080i playback with an nvidia 6600GT.  The video card doesn't offload as much of the processing in Linux as it does in Windows.  I'd seriously consider a dual core CPU and you can go lighter on the video card.  Generally a 6000 or 7000 series nVidia card will allow you to run the UI and the highest setting (UI2 with alpha blending).

Some TV's can be very fussy over DVI.  Usually fewer resolutions are supported. You should check your manual to see what is supported over DVI.  VGA is generally much more forgiving.  Try doing a google search for a modeline for your TV.  Chances are that someone else has already figured it out for you.  If you find a valid modeline then you can plug it into your xorg.conf and you should be good to go.  If you can't get it to work then stick with VGA.  1600x1200 VGA is much better than 640x480 DVI.   You projector might work fine with DVI, so you can try it again when you need to cross that bridge.

I want to use the 2nd internal drive on the Core as a picture server for my laptop.  The problem is that I'm having difficulty getting Samba to work consistently. I can manually add a samba share from within ubutunu.  That works fine for a few days\hours until LMCE modifies the smb.conf file on me.  Obviously, I need to add the share from within LMCE so that my share doesn't get deleted.

I was able to add a share using template #1790.  That seemed to work except that it doesn't make the shared folder public.  If I select "System Settings"->Sharing from within Ubuntu I can see the new device in the list and samba is enabled.  If I select it an click "Change" the "Share with Samba" box is checked, but the public and writeable boxes aren't.  Without these boxes checked I can't view the share from my laptop.  Is there an option that I can check in the web admin that will make the share public\writeable?

Yes it's possible.

Zap2it labs (one of the guide sources for MythTV) supports satellite guide listings, so that shouldn't be a problem.  There 3 different ways to change channels on a set top box: IR, serial port, and USB.  DishNetwork receivers are notorious for not having serial ports, so you'll probably need an IR blaster.  You may have gotten one with your WinTV Card (not sure if it's supported in Linux).  The trick will be to learn the IR codes so that Myth can control it properly.  Do a google search on your receiver model and MythTV.

Nope.  It was removed from the Media Directors page as well.

That make sense.  I did the same thing now that I think about it.  I guess I never associated that change as being the solution to the recording problem.


It looks like for RC1 both IPs get set to 192.168.80.1 by default.  This seems to work much better.  Myth is much for stable for me with RC1 than the Beta2.

I tried to install on top of beta 2 and I can't get it to run anymore. In fact, I got a samba failed to load problem and it now takes a long time to boot up. Look like I need to reinstall everything again. This is a big issue, we can't install everything again when a new release comes out.

That's interesting.  I had the exact same problem when I attempted to upgrade over top of Beta2.  I backed up my mythTV database and then purged everything related to myth and Pluto.  I got the same samba failure when I booted the box.  I eventually just gave up and did a clean install.

That's strange.  I've installed the A180 5 or 6 different times with each release of LMCE and I never saw that problem.  Here are a couple of things to try:

Are you sure the myth backend isn't running when you try to run mythtv setup?
Check the permissions on the device: ls -l /dev/dvb/adapter0

It's a new card right?  I'd make sure it actually works by testing it outside of Myth.  Try accessing it using VLC.  It's been a while since I've done that, so I don't recall exactly how you set it up.  I believe you need to point VLC to /dev/dvb/adapter0/.  The tricky part is finding a valid channel within VLC.

I recently purchased an HDHomeRun so I'm not currently using my A180 with RC1.

I was able to get the dual network card configuration working with RC1.  During the installation, both cards were detected.  It configured one for an external connection and the gigabit card for the internal network.  I ended up needed to use DHCP on external NIC or I couldn't get on the internet.  I would prefer to have a static IP, but I can live with it.

Here's what my final setup looks like:

Cable Modem->Eth0 (192.168.2.xxx)

Eth1 (192.168.80.xxx) ->Gigabit switch ->Wireless Access Point->Laptop
                              ->Laptop
                              ->VOIP modem
                              ->HDHomeRun

With this setup I was able to eliminate my router completely since LMCE is acting as the firewall.
