Odd video skip on 8.10 and NAS

First off great work by everyone in the alpha releases! I have had this problem for some time now. I'm using an Asus P5N7A-VM mobo as a hybrid running latest release alpha 2.35, tried different nvidia drivers, tried running in UI1 and UI2 but no difference, doesn't seem to be a problem with playing directly from disc, and this has happened on previous releases also. The problem I am having is when watching video stored on a Buffalo Linkstation, the video and audio skips every three minutes, but also at multiples of three (example, if it is 10:29 and the video is playing, it will skip at 10:30, 10:33, 10:36 and so on). The only time I have fixed this was a clean install and reformatting my NAS, which obviously I do not wish to do again. I have tried turning off the screen saver, but it didn't help. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi,

Just for grins you could go into wedadmin>media files sync and uncheck "Update Media Daemon".

This would stop updatemedia from accessing your NAS during video playback.

just a warning, if you do this, then files won't automatically be added to the database when they are found on the disk.

Thanks for the reply. All seems well by unchecking Update Media Daemon. But does this mean when I rip a new DVD I need to manually sync the database?

Correct. This indicates a network interconnect issue that you need to resolve. Are you using gigabit ethernet with a high quality switch?

Actually my bad, I tried the DVD I was watching last night and it is still skipping, along with others. Yes I am using  gig E and a gig E switch. I thought that it could be a network issue at first because it happens only with my NAS, but I tried plugging just the NAS directly to the Hybrid to bypass the switch and still no luck.

Also I have fixed this before but that involes a clean install of Alpha and reformatting the NAS and re-ripping the DVD's. After this it works fine. It's only when I update to the latest version.

Hi,

Just to verify...

these packages have been applied?

/usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh (this installs libdvdcss2)
apt-get install w32codecs
apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras

King

Yes all of these have been applied, as I would not be able to view DVD's without them. The weird part about this is it seems to be tied to a clock, in intervals of three minutes at multiples of three. This is driving me nuts!

Hi,

Have you tried top?

Login a root.

From a command prompt run 'top' and it will give you the most active processes and also tell you their memory use.

Maybe you will see something kick in every 3 minutes.

King

Yes i've tried top and nothing sticks out,  given I'm running 4 gigs memory and an Intel core duo dual core. Other than that Xine_Player is only about 8% CPU, and memory usage is negligible, nothing goes over 2%.

I'll keep checking top.
Thanks
