HDCP + LinuxMCE
« on: August 20, 2009, 07:35:44 pm »
Hello All,

I have been doing some research and would like to get a feel for if the below is possible and what would need to happen to achieve this.

After looking at different threads and features I came up with a solution to watch and capture Blu-Ray HDCP content on linux without needing HDCP support on the linux system. Here is how.

1: Take the HDCP (HDMI) source and connect it to the HDFury2 (http://www.curtpalme.com/HDFury2.shtm).
2: Take the component HDFury2 Output and HDFury2 SPDIF Output and connect it to the Hauppage HD-PVR (http://www.hauppage.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html).
3: Take the Hauppage HD-PVR and connect to the PC.
4: Configure LinuxMCE to use the HD-PVR. (This will need driver support and VDPAU which I am reading is in the works. Once driver support and VDPAU support is setup this should work like it should. Correct me if I am wrong.)

With this setup you wont get full 1080p as the HD-PVR will not support it. If there is another capture device that will support 1080p please let me know as this would be even better :). Please correct any information I posted here and please provide any comments to the above. Thank you for your time and have a great day!!!

Thanks,
JD

Yeah this is about the only way anything like this will ever work, but the HDPVR isnt usable in linux yet.

Per the following link it appears that it is being worked on to run in linux. It seems we might be closer then we thought. Does anyone have an idea of when VDPAU support is going to be ready?

Well unusable is probably a little strong... but unstable would be probably about right.

Judging by the great work Niz23 is doing I think vdpau will be generally deployed in 0810 pretty soon (ie in the Orbiter/xine and in MythTV...and hopefully vdr too) and therefore available from the svn.

Cool that sounds good. Thank you for the info. Looking forward to the updates :)

Also do you know of any capture devices that support 1080p?

So do I understand all of this correctly?  Even with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815327005  I can't record and playback in HD?

that is a tuner device, this discussion is about capture devices. yes the hdhomerun works with hd broadcasts, as long as they arent encrypted.

Hi

the HDHomerun is supported in 0810 but the HDhomerun DVB-T is not.
This is due to Myth that need updating..
As I understand form Thom is that the HDhomerun should work fine.

Ah ha!  The Monday is ruining my reading and comprehension skills.  Thanks for the clarification.

Hi,

The build of MythTV 0.21 in the 0810 repos does not support the HDHomerun DVB-T model. However the later build in the Avenard repos that also support vdpau etc does support the HDhomerun and will support HD encoded content. We are using DVB-S HD content successfully with these builds. See this article for more info http://www.mythtv.co.nz/mythtv/2009/05/20/hdhomerun-review-part-3/. We are using the Avenard MythTV 0.21 builds in our shipping 0710 Dianemo product and in our 0810 testing too (we dont use HDhomeruns though I have to say as with recent v4l builds the Hauppauge T500 is working stable again and we have chosen this card as our standard in Dianemo) and these are performing excellently.

See other threads here for more info on using the Avenard repo with LinuxMCE.

All the best

Andrew

We can't do this for a long term solution, and in the end, we'll probably have to maintain our own replacement builds of mythtv and xine.

Hi

At this stage I can't even get Myth working at all.. it just flash like it reloads ever 30 sec.
Now I have tried the repo and still no luck. U have got a HDhomerun DVB-T and would love to get it working but has got no luck as yet..
I am getting new MD's so I hope that will help in fixing this..

We have taken a snapshot of the Avenard Myth repo which we use to install to our 0710 build and then we periodically pull in changes and test them and then update our repos when we're happy
