home automation with the new release
« on: December 13, 2007, 06:58:45 am »
I know that I will probably get slapped for asking, but can anyone tell me if there are going to be major changes to the home automation stuff in the new version?  I still havent decided whether to use zwave or x10 and I just want to know if 0710 is focusing more on one or the other, or if it will be about the same as it is now.

I apologize if this has been covered already - i tried looking for an answer before posting but didnt find anything.  I'm hoping to begin collecting the modules I want to use when deals come up (like the one just posted with amazon's rebates).

it doesn't matter if you commit to one or the other...and to tell you the truth, with the way Insteon integration is going, that will probably be the module set to use soon... you can combine zwave, x10, GC100, whatever all in the same system.

Well the Insteon work going on here looks very interesting indeed... and we are working on a lot of z-wave improvements (whether they make it into the initial 0710 release is still uncertain at the moment... but they will be in an update if not ;-) )... X10 is still hanging in there but I suspect it will gradually loose its following. So of all of the current options X10 is definitely the least 'future proof' so to speak.

I've been successful with the Insteon integration..
Right now, I've got a PLM AND an EZBridge, some devices on the PLM, some on the EZBridge...

Each device sees the other's traffic... it's frickin cool watching the logs...
AND they respond to manual commands eg. you turn a light on manually... BOTH devices see the command... and execute an event.

once in a while, they actually step on each other!  hehe, but they timeout and resend, and all is well...

I'm getting about 3 commands/second throughput - that's Sending the command, receiving ack from the sending device, and then receiving ack from the child device itself.

when I use my fiire chief, it follows my hand movements pretty close...

have a few features still to work in... but even now, it's VERY useable.

EIB is supported now, I haven't seen too much about knx...
from what I gather, knx is more tailored for automation of large buildings...

If you have more info on knx, please share..  I'd like to take a closer look at the protocols..

it's a new name for the EIB ;)

if you have a FT1.2 bus connector it should work fine with pluto.

The zwave driver (for lights anyway) is not 2 directional either.
The zwave driver IS bidirectional for the PIR...
the Insteon driver is fully bidirectional.

We have developed UPB (240V Version) for Australian and EU markets - UPB is a power Line Control system - way ahead of anything X10 .... porting this to MCE would be a winner if anyone is interested.
