Comments on the LinuxMCE update mechanism
« on: September 10, 2007, 07:24:14 pm »
The first LinuxMCE update is out to handle MythTV and schedules direct.  There's a thread about it here: http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2300.0

I wanted to start a thread for people to comment on suggestions for improving the update mechanism in general.

Hi

I got a screen indicating that an update was available and asking if I wanted to install it. There was no option for Yes or No I just clicked the arrow. Restarted PC but no sign of the update being installed. Have I missed something?

Thanks

Paul

Well looking at the user experience I think some of the wording in the on screen messages is a little ambiguous. Also the update dropped into the console for a lengthy period... which is fine for all of us here but a non-technical user might find it disconcerting. I think it might be a good idea to have a progress bar (or possibly have it handled through the Manager UI)

I too had an update screen asking whether I wanted to install on next reboot with no yes or no options.
This screen popped up on the next 2 or 3 reboots, and then decided to add the yes / no buttons!

It updated fine after that.

I had similar issues. The first time the screen popped up it had no buttons to select so I clicked on the home button on the window.
The next time I booted it came up correctly and gave me the op[tions and then rebooted again and correctly gave me the update.

The update is broken for me. I have a nonstandard install.
LinuxMCE on a standard install will not function correctly. My TV blinks to a black screen or it locks up trying to start the frontend. The only way I was able to fix this issue was to download and install the newest drivers from nvidia.

The update gives me the correct screens telling me it is using the schedule direct site but the Data Provider script still points to the zap2it.

Also before I was able to execute the update the first time I rebooted the system. This left a lock file which cause me not to be able to download the patch. Looking into the log file I realized the lock file was there removed it and executed LMCEUpdate_DownloadXml.sh and it was able to download and install the patch.
