composer metadata tags for flac & mp3
« on: April 14, 2012, 04:42:31 pm »
I have a large classical music collection and would like to have a media centre that will read the composer tags on flacs and mp3 files?

I did read a couple of posts that suggested this feature might be available in 1004?

Thanks

Nothing in UpdateMedia shows that composer is read from the tags.

@ barrydocks:

What comes up on the metadata of your files for the artist? The reason I ask is that I have a copy of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. It comes up as the artist being Andrew Lloyd Webber.

What ever you want to include as the artists.
What I want is to have:
artist: performing artist, ie london symphmonic orchestra
album: what ever the cd tilte is, ie bach live at st pauls
track: synphonie number 1
composer: bach
plus any other tgs I can include like conductor, etc

If you are mannually editing the Meta data, might I suggest that you include the performer when you are listing CD title, and stick the composer in the artist field?

Also, from your other post, it seems like your only concern is to use LinuxMCE as a jukebox. If you don't also have video, home automation, telephony concerns, etc. ... LinuxMCE might be a bit overkill for your needs,... Not that I want to stear you away, or anything. But LinuxMCE is a project that melds many media and smart home functions into one place. Changing a small part of it, like the audio player's sorting functions, can therefore be a bigger task than what you might think.

JaseP,

is there a reason, other than that we currently don't store the composer tag in the id3 data, that you are suggesting to break the attributes? It makes much more sense for someone to get off their butt, and extend UpdateMedia to keep track of the composer and other attributes that LinuxMCE tracks, in the id3 files.

I am fairly resigned to this answer,

nearly, I have extensively used xbmc both live and openelec for media streaming music, internet video and HD media, and photos, etc.  I have also looked at canola, miro, boxee, enna, moovidia (which I think was elsa) and I have just posted on myth's email ring (but I was under the impression that LinuxMCE uses Myth as the media player?).

The only 2 packages I found that can do this are anorak on linux and foobar2000 on xp, I was hoping to get a distro type setup rather than a PC with a certain prgramme to run?

I am very open of other suggestions (ideally linux based)!!

LCME uses VDR or MythTV for TV only.
It uses xine for most video, but for certain types of content uses Mplayer.

I want to say audio is xine, but I am not sure and too lazy to look it up.
I never quit... I just ping out.

Linuxmce - Where everyone is never wrong, but we are always behind xbmc in the media / ui department.

This would be great, as you cab see I have looked extensively for a media package to do this meaning that LinuxMCE would be the only one able to do this which would be a big pull for classical music fans and audiophiles in general :)
Thanks - I just need to get it to install next  ;)

Not really, no...

Other than that I've never had a lot of faith in the Meta data... In my experience, it is pulled off the web, and can be very wonky (Andrew Lloyd Webber example above, plus 2 CDs in the Rolling Stones Greatest Hits 2 CD set, with completely different info, almost as if they were from 2 different collections).

Plus, although not for Audio, but for Video, I've never had any of my DVD rips identify correctly by any media center software (I mostly rip the movie only to AVI, or mp4, rather than copy full ISOs, for space saving reasons). So to satisfy my own needs, I would simply edit the Meta data...

But if someone can help barrydocks out, and flesh the id3 attribute tracking system out, great. I'm not much of an audiophile, I guess. It wouldn't occur to me to make the effort.

I agree that a significant amount of meta data downloaded form online databases is incorrect and I edit nearly all the metadata to correct things but that's not the point here.  I'm not suggesting that population of this data is done automatically, the issue is that for classical music the regular format of artist - album - track is not enough information, the addition of the composer tag would really be the minimum as other info such as conductor, venue, etc is also very useful.

You'd be surprised at how effective XBMC is at doing this

I would be more than happy to do the leg work, it's just that I am not a coder and I have never really used LinuxMCE before, I am still struggling with the install :-[

@ barrydocks,

Not doubting the usefulness of any of that information ... It just never occurred to me that having the labels correct would be of any importance. That said, I'm not a classical music fan, and Rock albums very often list the venue in the title (i.e.: Cheap Trick: Live at Budokan).

BTW, tried XBMC,... nice, and flashy, but it screwed up the Meta data searches on my vids just as bad as any others. Plus, if I was going to use it, I wanted it to use VLC as the video display engine. Changing that in it was like doing minor surgery. Also, not nearly as much in terms of home automation or telephony available on that platform. And forget about DVR/PVR/Live TV integration ... just experimental in XBMC. Nice concepts for a UI though, just needed to be more versatile.

I can't make you promises,  but I'll do what I can to help you through the install... I just need to know your Linux experience, what your hardware is, what version of LinuxMCE you're installing (Version, DVD or net install?), ... that sort of thing. Not like I'm particularly a LinuxMCE expert or anything, but I've been around Linux, and install issues for a little more than a decade.

Im not sure what you guys are using, but mp3 tag has pretty much never failed me. Problem tags? open the directory in mp3tag and it all gets cleaned, sorted, dealt with.

Maybe you guys should try that as opposed to the programs you are currently using that just arnt gettin the job done for you.

Mp3Tag, google it. in the mean time, back to class.

Unless you are willing to LEARN about linuxmce, you are really helping NOBODY by offering from what ive seen is BAD advice. Yes what you recommend would work on most Linux distros. LinuxMCE is not most Linux distros. To say you know nothing would be false. You just need to convert that pre-existing Linux knowledge  into a Linuxmce based view. Then you could be invaluable. But really, without knowing how the system works, how can you give people good advice? If you want to help, learn how the system works first, it will be a great help to everyone!
