Installation issues / Re: How to configure multiple hard drives
« on: April 06, 2012, 12:36:04 pm »
Thanks for the advice. Perhaps, what I was doing wrong was trying to do all this with desktop version of Ubuntu? I didn't like too much of 11.10 so I will try with 12.04b server that I haven't tried yet.

Installation issues / How to configure multiple hard drives
« on: April 06, 2012, 05:14:36 am »
I have a 250GB, and 3x2TB hard dives. I had running LMCE10.04 in Virtualbox but I never was able make use of those TB drives because I couldn't get past VB to recognize these drives. I have some down time this weekend and wondering how to go about it to make it work. I think I will start with a fresh install.
What I would like is to use 250GB drive to load Ubuntu 10.04 and run Virtualbox and load Kubuntu/LMCE10.04 as a VM. TB drives to house all media files. Do I set up disks (raid-0) in Ubuntu or set up raid-0 in LMCE running in VB? What are the steps that I should follow? or would you configure these drives in an another manner?
Thanks in advance.

I was watching this thread with interest since I too went through what JaseP went through well, minus the advanced stuff.
Last night I reinstalled LMCE10.04 in my server and went to bed after initiating Diskless_Create.
Tonight, after work I fired up one of my MDs and worked beatifully. Thank You L3MCE for fixing and Thank You too JaseP for raising the question.

Installation issues / Re: Help needed on reliable sources.list on LMCE 8.10

To my understanding, if you had used the LMCE8.10Final version, you don't have to apt-get update/upgrade at the installation.
2 weeks ago I had the same problem when I installed 8.10Final with apt-get update/upgrade. I had very good success with
installtion without going into update/upgrade.

Hi Sigg3.net,
Installing both LMCE 810 and 1004 went smoothly in VB. There was this tutorial in wiki "Installing LinuxMCE on Virtual Machine via VirtualBox" and I followed it well. Very good success.
The only thing I did differently is Network setup. I have 2 NICs in my core. After installing HOST OS (Ubuntu 11.04 desktop) I disabled my second NIC in Ubuntu Network setup.
I found out it doesn't matter whether you do this before or after installing LMCE. However, there were couple of things worth mentioning. I had to setup my first NIC as a NAT and the second NIC as a Bridge
with allow all in Advanced setup. I know wiki tells me otherwise and advice of a guru, but this is the only way I managed to get plug and play of LMCE going in my system throgh VB setup. I'll experiment with different setups later on.
My set up is: Cable Modem to Cisco Valet wifi, 1 port of the Valet is connected to NIC 1 of the core. NIC 2 of the core goes to a 24 port switch (Dell 2624) and all other devices (HDHomerun, Sipura 3102 and all other MDs and computers of the house, connects to this switch. Plug & Play works for me well.
Good Luck.

Hi Chekov,
I have had good luck with 8.10 versions until very recently. However, getting this going now has become a bit of a task. I really like what LMCE can do apart from just being a media center. I guess if I want it bad enough, I should stick with it. Right now, I am in the process of installing 10.04 in my virtualbox setup. I could always go back to 8.10Final on a later day if 10.04 beta put me in a spin.

[EDIT] 11-5-11
I just finished installing LMCE10.04Beta in VB. Relatively hazel free install if you follow the steps in wiki. Going through my set up at the moment. Being Beta, I am sure some modules may not work but that is work in progress. Remember to start with Kubuntu 10.04.

[EDIT] 11-6-11
I see LMCE810 is fixed. Thanks to all responsible for get it going. I'll reinstall in VB tomorrow and have a go at it.
I like what I see in 10.04. Much more responsive than 8.10F I thought.

"Ok, found a thread with instructions to login and type sudo startx.
I'm back at the desktop ... but where do I go from here?
The start menu isn't working correctly ..."

Sorry to say, I am too at the same stage.
Waiting for someone in the know to respond.

1. Download LMCE 8.10 Final and burn to disk.  http://linuxmce.iptp.org/release/LinuxMCE-8.10-final.iso (from http://www.linuxmce.org/)
2. Have patients. Everytime I rushed, I got burned when installing. Make sure Internet access is functional.
3. Install LMCE. This is a 2 part process. First, it installs Kubuntu 8.10 and takes you to KDE desktop. From the terminal of kubuntu you further need to do apt-get update*   and then apt-get dist-upgrade.
Second, Install LMCE from Kubuntu desktop (install icon)
    * is to indicate that I suspect some repository issue that you have to overcome according to http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,12083.0.html. I would like to know how you resolve this if you would.
4. Let it go through it's motions. sometimes you don't see much happening but it is doing it's thing. May be a longer wait if Internet speeds are low.
5. This will bring you to AV Wizard and you'd have to configure it according to your desired setup.
6. You can't PXE boot any other connected MDs just as yet till you do   /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh from KDE terminal. ( do not combine this with step 3 above)
7. refer to http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Category:Tutorials when you want to explore. some are bit outdated but most are very useful.
Good Luck

PS. I am a newbi myself and finding my way around also. But above mentioned steps gives me good results when installing LMCE810Final

I most certainly will update the wiki. Thanks for your help.
Kind of curious if I set my second Nic to Internal, would it matter to other MDs (at this time booted to their OS's) to access Internet when I am not running LMCE at the virtual/core. (since LMCE won't be running for DHCP distribution). I guess I'll find that out when I install LMCE810 Final on another Virtual environment with the settings you have recommended.
I was reading about "Bridged Adapter" settings in VirtualBox manual and it implies that has the potential to leave me exposed to bad things if I am not careful.
Thanks

Awesome!  Wiped clean 250GB hard disk and loaded Ubuntu 11.04 from the DVD I copied download to. Did system update and upgrade. My other 3 1TB disks were recognized by Ubuntu also. Went on on-line and downloaded VirtualBox Linux Ubuntu i386. Double clicked on it and installed VirtualBox 4.1.4. Instructions in wiki was excellent. Followed thru step by step. The only thing I changed out of that is networking. I selected Intel Nic and set adapter 1 as NAT and then Adapter 2 as a Bridged Adapter and selected ETH1 with Promiscuous mode set to allow all. I do not know whether this is the right thing to do or not but it worked for me. Perhaps someone savvy with networking can advice me whether this setup makes me venerable. Installed Snapshot (Oct 5th). I only saw Bonowongo's advice after couple of hours after the install. It was a breeze. I don't know whether I am imagining or not but it seem Install went much faster and smoother. HDHome run was recognized instantly. I went to sleep after starting Diskless_Create to run overnight. This morning I started my home theater MD and I felt that was also smoother task. Went on to create Diskless_Creates in other MDs that I have. No problems what so ever. The only thing that I have to comment on is that my Gyration remote feels sluggish than usual.
However, my other 3 TB disks were not being recognized by LMCE at this time. I think this is more of a VirtualBox related thing than LMCE based. Considering I am learning my way around Ubuntu 11.04 and VirtualBox this will take few more hours/day to figure things out unless someone already know the answer to this and like to advice me on.
My sincere thanks to LMCE developers for an awesome job that they had done so far developing LMCE and to people contributed to writing Wikis for people like me to take advantage of them.
All the best.

Thank you all. I am proceeding with Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop as my host OS. I just started to install it and hope to install VirtualBox over the net right after. Will run LMCE 8.10 Snapshot (Oct 5th) within VB. I will post my findings.
Thanks again

I thought kubunto 8.10/LMCE to be configured as guest OS. I haven't seen VB for Kubuntu. Am I over complicating things for me?

Installation issues / VirtualBox LinuxMCE

Hi,
I have a Dell T310 Quad core Xenon with 8GB ram and 2NICs that I run LMCE8.10 Final now (onboard audio/video only) as a core out of the way in the basement with multiple MDs throughout the house. I have been using this for over a year now dedicated to LMCE versions. I consider myself as a newbie when it comes to LMCE and now VirtualBox though. What I would like to do is start from scratch and install Ubuntu 11.04 as the host OS and run VirtualBox. With that I'd like to run LMCE 8.10 as a guest and LMCE10.04 beta, perhaps XP and Windows7 also. I'd like to use my primary 500GB HD to run host/VB/guest OS's and keep media in other HDs. I have few questions perhaps better answered by all helpful experts in this forum.  Is there an advantage to run Ubuntu 11.04 server as a host OS oppose to Ubuntu 11.04 desktop to run VirtualBox? Would you install LMCE from 8.10 Final release or use snapshot (Oct 5th release) in VB? Do I need to issue more commands in terminal to get LMCE running in VB? How would you configure (hd/ram allocations) in VirtualBox?
Thanks
