Look you and i have different views on this...I'm not 'inciting' an argument at all. But as I have said before, and I firmly believe, that the MO is not necessarily the right approach for iPhone. We see iPhone as a rich device that has a whole aproach to Apps (and their UI) that is very different. We just dont see that the MO is the right approach on iPhone at all. We'd like to see a nicely crafted iPhone app that feels like an iPhone app to users and exploits the iPhone's UI paradigm fully (and respectfully). In our view doing anything less on the iPhone would not be a great idea. It would be like porting a Windoze style App to the Mac...and not doing a real Mac UI...how many times have we all seen that in the past.

I agree that MO should not be used as is on iPhone.

I have been using XBMC for a while now (Still using my LinuxMCE Core as a NAS and dualbooting my MD's as XBMC/MD exept for the diskless ones).
There is a iPhone/iPodTouch remote app for XBMC and it works very well for XBMC.

I'm not saying that this is the only way to do it, just that it is a good indication on how it can be done...

In Denmark (where I come from) the model with 160GB harddrive and 2GB memory costs around 290GBP, it's a bit more than what it costs in the UK but thats how it is to live in Denmark 

Try living in Norway...

For the price of 1 revo's I can take a plane to London to buy one and still have money left...
For the price of 2 I can bring the GF and stay a night, and still get 2 revo's home

Not sure what OS I have installed on my N810, but its a 07.10 version of the Orbiter software. It works fine on both my 07.10 LMCE install and the 08.10 Alpha (I just have to change to correct orbiter number if I switch LMCE version).

Yesterday I started playing with a backend I found in the XBMC forums.

It's only a 2MB .deb file and runs happily on my 8.10 testserver.

For me it does what VDR and MythTV never made possible... I never get them patched correctly and in the end I just run in to dependency issues. All I want is to see the channels I pay for on all my MD's.

It has a webgui for setting up, and it's just way to easy to set up... I started thinking "is this a joke?".

With only 2MB, it is able to detect my DVB card (i had installed S2API drivers), and it was identified as a DVB-C card and I could select cable providers. I selected Norway, Canal Digital. And it added a few transponders.  It did not have all (like any other software I have seen) but then things started happening in the monitoring window. It was scanning the transponders automatically, auto detecting new transponders and after 1 minute or so it had a complete list of channels and transponders?!?

On the same page there is a Probe button to add channels to the frontends, and when pressing that, it tested every channel for open or encrypted and added only those channels which where open to the frontends.

It even has a integrated Card Client, and I added my Dreambox, which is where my subscription card is located. Now I did a new probe, and it added also the channels I had on that subscription card

The EPG started filling up automatically on all channels and I could record, shows.

All this was done in the webgui. Recordings are done in MKV and play on LinuxMCE.
It even supports recording of my HD channels.

So can this be uses for LinuxMCE? The backend seems complete, the webgui is done, easy to install, no patching, works out of the box... But what about the MD's? Well, it's a backend that streams to any frontend...

Since there is no support for that on LinuxMCE I have tested it on XBMC and I must say I'm impressed! It works
Just added a URL and that was it, I could browse channels and start them. Pause also work.
Since XBMC has VDPAU support the streams where not using much CPU.
On SD channels there was no difference when VDPAU was off, but HD channels where unwatchable without VDPAU.

Lonelycoder also makes a frontend, but I did not like that much.

Tom, the Dinovo Mini is already plug and play!
Well, not in 7.10, but in 8.10...

There is a few missing buttons, that do not show like the Fiire and Gyration remotes.
The MCE button and zoom +-.

If you get the HID stuff done, you might be able to fix those buttons to work as F6, F7, F8 since this keyboard does not have any F keys.

There are boxes that split HDMI to DVI/Coaxial Digital

And most TV's with HDMI have Coaxial Digital out...

There are boxes that convert Coaxial to Optical too.

Receivers with HDMI are getting cheaper, so you might consider upgrading it.

If you are willing to wait, VDPAU will eventually make it's way into LMCE.
When that happens, ION based MD's should work great with 1080p.

VDPAU is not yet working out of the box on the big linux distros, and the ION based machines/motherboards have not been on the marked for many days yet.

I guess VDPAU will make it's way into most video players and linux distros this fall, but for now you can allways manually patch players to support it. In LMCE you will have to run stuff in KDE for now or maybe start making the integration patches for LMCE?

If you get your hands at a ION powered board, you could test the VDPAU support with the XBMC Live CD. It supports VDPAU after selecting it as the default decoder.

Totallymaxed, if you want to test VDPAU on the Acer Revo, the latest XBMC Live CD supports it out of the box
Just boot the CD, Choose Nvidia in the startup, and when booted set decoder to VDPAU.
Insert a USB drive with x264 content and se the CPU use in a terminal.

I have tested this on one of my MD's with a GF8600GT card and it works
CPU is at 2-8% load while watching 1080p content.

Yes, I use UI2 with overlay, and yes the photo screen saver works on the Core and all the MD's.

I find this idea very attractive! Maybe not for media sharing (I run ADSL, and maybe upload speed is not fast enough for video streaming) but for remote house control.

Anyways, for those willing to have a remote MD on the other side of the tunnel, it might be necessary a HD based media director, Installing or starting a diskless MD through a VPN would take a lot of time to start.

Think bigger...

A VPN between 2 Cores could open up the possibility to sync data between them. This could be done while you are not using the system or your internet connection has low usage. That way you could not only control your hollyday appartment, but you can still se your favorite TV shows or DVD collection when you are there.

I have now tried using the following drivers:

Current official release: 180.51
Current pre-release: 180.53
Current beta release: 185.18.08

None of them helps the integrated GF7050pv
I guess it will never work...

I'm gonna order a couple of these cards to test on my MD's now that I know that VDPAU works (in ubuntu, not LMCE yet).
