Users / Re: Sucess Stories?
« on: September 17, 2007, 01:14:53 pm »
Well I have a little success story. One of the motherboards that is listed as bad hardware is working perfectly with my setup. I'm running on the Asus K8V motherboard with an AMD64 3400 CPU. A Nvidia 6600GT, with 1.5 gb of ram.
This system is running like a dream on UI2
The only problems I am having is with basic setup issues. It is more a case of I should read the user manual more.

Awesome! Thanks! This is what I shall do.
Mount /MediaSVR to another folder inside /home.
later when i connect the other 200gb drive i will replace that with the audio one, as my music collection is about 180gb. this drive will be purely for music then :-)

Installation issues / Re: Recomended hardware doesn't work. Does anything?

I dont know about the rest of you guys/ gals, but im very happy with what the media centre has offered me so far. Granted im still busy setting it up, and here and there I do run into some problems, but all of these are fixable. Every day I find new little features and gadgets built in that amaze me even more. Even my girlfriend (who is not a technical fundi) is amazed at what this thing can do, and how easy it is.

but that is just the thing. LMCE is not finding it, because it only scans /home for media
then if i should record from the pvr, it will default to /home, and record it there, however there is only a couple of gigs left on that drive. it should use /MediaSVR that has 215GB left.

Users / Re: Best Value NVIDIA Card for UI2
« on: September 13, 2007, 11:14:21 am »
I'm running the the Nvidia 6600GT and UI2. Works like a dream. Only issue I had was after I installed kubuntu and selected the option to update the nvidia drivers I was limmited to 640x480. But then after lmce installed i had all the options available to me. i think during the install it updates the kernal, and then the drivers works. before that i saw something in one of the log files that stated about the driver does not support my kernel version. But all fixed now. the 6600 GT is also very cost effective. I paid about R1200 for mine when they just came out and was the latest and greatest. divide that by 7 to get a rough idea of what it is in $
they will be cheaper now.

Users / custom media locations...?
« on: September 12, 2007, 01:22:45 pm »
I've noticed that the media is loaded from /home/[whatever]
I have split my drive into 2 partitions. the 1st partition is about 20gb, and is there purely for the OS, and LMCE. then there is a 4gb swap drive. the rest of the drive was mounted as /MediaSVR as the last partition.
The thinking behind this was so that i do not have to copy the media again after a reinstall.
At  1st I was confused as to why LMCE did not pick up the media on this partition. Now at least i know why. I then created a softlink to my MediaSVR folder, but im not sure this is working like it should. It picks up the media when I click on video on the onscreen orbiter, but when i click on brows media or when i want to assign cover art in the admin webpage, it does not list the media.
Is there a way i can specify the /MediaSVR partition as the default media folder? Or should I perhaps copy the current /home folder contents to /MediaSVR, then mount that as /home? I dont want to experiment these things to much in the fear of breaking it.

Users / Orbeter Freezes phone
« on: September 12, 2007, 01:00:33 pm »
I am using a htc PDA phone with windows mobile 6 loaded.
I then added a bluetooth dongle to my brand new LMCE system (by the way, I cannot believe how easy that was. picked up the bluetooth without me having to lift a finger!)
Once i made the connection, it sent me the software which i then installed. It did however say it was for the previous version of the OS on my phone. Now when i Use the orbiter on my phone to control lmce, it crashes my phone when i exit. Well not a full crash, but it will not let me return to the today screen...
Any one seen this? Maybe a hint: on the orbiter setup screen it looks like it picked up up as symbian 60 or something like that.?

Installation issues / Re: Kubuntu Install from CD
« on: September 09, 2007, 05:39:10 pm »
I opened that one, and it is the same as the mirror i have used.
I have downloaded the the alternate i386 iso, but when it asks for the location of the cd or iso, it does some stuff for 5 minutes, then comes back with with the error that it cannot cache the live cd.
So my thoughts are that i've been using the wrong iso for the install.
There is not an iso called live cd as such, so perhaps I have been using the wrong iso?
I did the kubuntu install from kubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso
Is this correct?
for good measures i am downloading kubuntu-7.04-Desktop-i38.iso, and hoping that will work better. It is a bit of an expensive download seeing as in South Africa we only get 3GB a month on ADSL :-(

Installation issues / Re: Kubuntu Install from CD

Ok cool!
Thanks.
Now to Clarify.... Is there a difference in the Feisty Alternate install and the LIve CD?
Cause on the download pages I only have access to the Alternate install, and cannot see the LIve CD like the one that comes with the normal Ubuntu CDs.

Can you perhaps give me a download link for the i386 Kubuntu live cd?
Will I have to reinstall the Alternate version? Reason I ask is I have loaded about 100GB of media to the box that will become the media server.
Thanks in advance!

Installation issues / Kubuntu Install from CD
« on: September 07, 2007, 06:12:07 pm »
Hi,
Im Trying to install the Linux MCE from the 3 CD's i downloaded. I install Kubuntu with no trouble!
I then proceed, to enable the root user, log in at that en then resume the install by running the desktop shortcut that was created. It then comes to a point where it asks me for the live CD of kubuntu. Is this really needed? It is not part of the download section, ISOs. I am really eager to trey this, so what can i do to make this install working without the LIVE cd.
I have the normal Kubuntu feisty install cd and the 2 Linux MCE cds

Then another question:
It asks me to install the nvidia drivers, then after the reboot im running at 640 x 480. Ive got the 6800GT
