Newbee! Questions
« on: April 06, 2010, 08:36:45 pm »
Hello all!

I have been following linux MCE for a bit now. Im on the verge of trying to start my own LinuxMCE setup @ my house. please forgive me if these questions have been asked before ( i did search, just did not find a absolute answers i was hoping to get).

1. Media Directors and orbiters can be connected via Wireless?

2. If i want to setup a FreeNAS as my storage server, LinuxMCE see's it without any issues?

3. What is your take on this as a media director http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856119016? Or do you recommend a different one?

4. Should i use 8.10 beta or 7.10? I do have some linux experience (getting packages, installing, etc... not compiling per-say)

5. Can i have multiple tuner cards installed on the core? (For example 2 digital cards so i may be able to record/watch 4 streams)?

Thanks for all your help in this fact-finding post! Keep up the great work!

Im trying to find out if the MD i mentioned supports PXE boot. Because from i read this is necessary for the MD to function correctly....

If anyone else has any more insight, please let me know!

The FoxCon Atom/Ion machine you mention does support PXE but the initramfs will not have the correct NIC drivers 'out of the box'. See this wiki page for information on fixing this http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Unrecognized_NIC

All the best

Maybe abit of a hijack here, sorry in that case but may also be of help for the threadstarter..

@ Mandingo or anyone else that knows..
regarding Freenas, you know if it should be setup as samba or cfs ?

I would like the Freenas to let lmce know when things has changed and not let lmce poll the freenas, meaning my hdd's could get to sleep until they are used. Does cfs support that function?
(mine is setup as samba)

That's a sharp looking unit. i really like the form factor and the mounting clip. Let me know if you get one and it works. (FYI, the white version is $10 cheaper at the moment) I'd be a bit worried about the heat that most every commenter has mentioned since my Dell Zino (Can't get working on LMCE yet but I use with Mythbuntu) just started to overheat now that it's no longer 60F in my house (dell shipping out replacement). I have 1GB of 4200 laying around after a netbook upgrade so it makes this look even more attractive...especially if it is confirmed to work with LMCE.

The FoxCon Atom/Ion machine you mention does support PXE but the initramfs will not have the correct NIC drivers 'out of the box'. See this wiki page for information on fixing this http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Unrecognized_NIC
I'm having this problem with getting the above mentioned Zino to boot. I followed the instructions and no luck. I would hate to get another machine and get stuck at the same place. In case you have any suggestions, my thread is here: http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=9862.0
