[solved] KDE can not start
« on: February 20, 2010, 09:26:56 pm »
I just updated my core to the latest release "Update 2009-02-18 22795 ", now I tried to open KDE desktop I got the following error:

===============================
The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE:
No write access to ‘/home/linuxmce/.ICEauthority’.
KDE is unable to start.
===============================
Xmessage;
Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation.
===============================
So I did:
dcerouter_1005373:/home/linuxmce# chmod 777 .ICEauthority
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root     root       1968 2010-02-15 17:59 .ICEauthority
===============================
NO good, here's the list of the files before modifications, any ideas????

Boot recovery mode, enter root and remove the files from the directory
rm .Xauthority .ICEauthority
Reboot
I did it before on Kubuntu. Worked.
With lmce, i'm not sure it will solve, so don't blame later... ;-)

I renamed the files and rebooted, LMCE couldn't boot anymore so I went back and renamed the files.

Now I'm back at square one !!!

i was checking my system, i do not have a /home/linuxmce directory.
So, i guess the user is linuxmce.
And under the directory for the user i've created when installing kubuntu and them lmce, the .ICEauthority file is owned by this user, not by root.
i got this problem once, under kubuntu, and removing the files .Xauthority .ICEauthority helped.
You can try following:
crtl-alt-f1 (or f2)
log in as the user
create another user.
logout and login as the other user.
rename the directory linuxmce to linuxmce.old
create the directory linuxmce with the linuxmce user permissions.
xhost +
logout and log in as linuxmce
startx -- :1  or  /usr/X11R6/bin/X --nolisten tcp :1 vt8
for some of the above commands, you will need sudo.
as being the first time linuxmce user is starting x, it will create the needed files.
please be aware that i don't know your environment and knowledge.

PW44, thanks for your support, I just did the following and it worked, I have no idea how did this happen??

Code: [Select]
dcerouter_1005373:/home/linuxmce# chown linuxmce:linuxmce .Xauthority
dcerouter_1005373:/home/linuxmce# chown linuxmce:linuxmce .ICEauthority
