I have read in this forum and on wiki about Hauppauge DVB cards. The WinTV-HVR 4000 and NOVA-T-500 seem to be working in linux. So I planned to order one of each, but then I noticed that the webstore offered now a HD version of these cards.

Will these HD cards work in LMCE, or should I try to get the older card without HD?
(I am at this stage not concerned about receiving or vewing HD streams, regular is just fine...)

I am living in Norway, so I need support for the MPEG4 H264 and AAC audio for the DVB-T features. I will also be using DVB-s. All free to air...

If someone have other card, type/brand to recommend, feel free to comment.

Always buy HD other wise in the end its not worth it, if the card in question doesnt have support as of yet, i will make it so it does and become plug and play but some required information will be needed, at the footer of my reply i have a wiki page that i created that has all the pnp cards as off right now

Thanks

Thanks for your replay Mandingo :)

Then I will order HD, and if needed collect the info for you.

None in stock by this time, looks like I have to wait a while for my order to come through... :P

Mandingo:

I see there is a new PCIe card from Hauppauge in the webstores now. It's called Hauppauge WinTV - HVR-4400 HD MCE KIT. http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/products/data_hvr4400.html

It looks like a PCIe version of the WinTV-HVR 4000HD, due to same hybride layout/funtions...

Due to limited PCI slots on mATX boards, would it be possible to add this one to the support list of yours? That be if you get the nessesary card info?

or should I still go for the WinTV-HVR 4000 HD?

(my webstore canceled my order for WinTV-HVR 4000HD, but I received the NOVA-T-500-HD. Actually the package was renamed from NOVA-TD-500 to NOVA-T-500-HD?? Still need a new mobo to do the card info for you :-))

I don't understand what the 4000HD is considering the 4000 does HD. Maybe it's the software that comes with it. Nice to see that there's a PCIe version though!

When I look in the manual for the NOVA-TD-500 it says that it is capable of HD receiving, but you need a codec and a fast CPU (Core Duo 2.8; without HW acceleration)

I guess the HD tag is just a naming upgrade, to show the potensial buyer that it is capable of receiving HD format. :)

Regarding NOVA-T-500s, take a look at this thread http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=5593.0

Does anybody know if that pesky USB disconnect problem got sorted? Or is it still an issue?

Doomed, thought this card was plug and play for LinuxMCE.

Still the article at LINUX TV is ending with this:
Quote
2008-06-16 - Today, using an up-to-date Ubuntu 8.04 x64, a recent V4L-DVB tree, the MythTV tuning and EIT settings and the provided remote receiver, this card is absolutely rock solid with no USB disconnects, no tuner lost or any other trouble. The few MythTV tweaks are an slight annoyance, but they are worth it. This card is a great DVB-T solution!

But it is old from 16.6.2008. Your forum discussion is from april 2009. Anything happening in the last year, anyone?

I can still return this card to the dealer and get my mony refounded. But I only have this week to do that before the timeframe goes out....

This page on wiki for myth tv here says: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Hauppauge_WinTV_Nova-T_500_PCI

68109 Model; This card was released in very low volumes, probably only in the UK, and is not supported in Linux. Hauppauge has been swapping these units for Linux users; call Hauppauge customer services. There is no new stock of this card (end of life components) and it has now been replaced by the 84109 Model Nova-TD 500 which works fine in Linux.

My model nr is the latter; 84109 LF Rev D3F4 Nova-TD-500. This is stampet on the card.

We dont have a device template for the T500... cue Thom to give me a 'bashing' for not having one ;-)

...but we do have it working very well using our V4l package (PM me if any of you would like a copy...its DKMS based so will work correctly on 0710 or 0810...or indeed 0910 too ;-)  )...and reliably in Myth now. The only issue we see is that if we reboot the T500's do not get in initialised properly from a 'warm' firmware boot. The solution is to do a shutdown, remove the power for 15 secs or so, then powerup and all is well. This is an irritation but compared to before when the T500 was so unstable it was unusable its very acceptable!

All the best for Xmas and for the new year too!

Andrew

Purps, looks like the support is better, but still with some issues...

T-500 and HVR-4000 should both be PnP
The HVR-4400 you might need to supply Mandingo the stuff he needs (if he's still available that is).

Well if the only issue is that it won't work from a warm reboot, then that is definitely progress!

Andrew, if you're reading this, would you still recommend the KWorld 399s over the Nova-T-500s? Assuming that a cold restart works 100% of the time, and that this is the only issue? I would be very interested to know, I still have my Nova-T-500s...

Yes Schmich, both NOVA-T-500 and NOVA-DT-500 is listed, so maybe the problems is in the past then.

When I read from the box and manual with the NoVA-DT-500(actually there is a sticker on the box with the name: Hauppauge WinTV-Nova-T-500-HD, but the box, manual and PCI card states nova-TD-500..) it still talks about the "Diversity Technology" mode; one antenna shared for both tuners on Ant 1, or diversity mode with one antenna pr tuner Ant 1 and Ant 2 connected.

FOR INFO ONLY: I can also see that there is a VIA ship on the card as well, so it is proberly not the DiBcom DiB0710 controller, as stated "Diversity" and not supported in this wiki here:

Not sure what to make out of this labeling thing on this card I have received.... :-\

I ordered a WinTV-Nova-T-500-HD but seem to have received WinTV-Nova-TD-500. Since the printing on the card itself states WinTV-Nova-TD-500.

Is this a regular practice from Hauppauge, to not update their pagaging and labeling on new revisons of theyr products? or have the reseller made som adjustment to an older product?

I think I will contact the reseller about this, agree?

I was just looking at the Hauppauge webpage, and the "TD" / "T" is just mixed together...

on the Scandinavian pages there are two models:
WinTV-Nova-TD-500 http://www.hauppauge.se/site/products/data_novat500.html
This card has two aerial connectors!!
WinTV-Nova-TD-500HD http://www.hauppauge.se/site/products/data_novat500hd.html
If you study the pictures for the HD version the "D" in "TD" is not there. But in the text it is.
The HD version has only one aerial connector! And the card layout looks quite different from the none HD version, its a complete new card in my eyes!! :o

Mine card however has two aerial, and looks like the none HD version labeled.

Same in the United Kingdom pages, the "T" in "TD" is missing, but only in the picture banner. And there is no HD etition at all here. But for Germany,France, Spain etc. Here they have only the WinTV-Nova-T-500. And nice, they have a double picture banner that shows both single aerial and a double.... ??? http://www.hauppauge.fr/site/products/data_novat500.html

I think the pictures are wrong in those places, and that the text is most possible to be correct. That would make sence anyway...

i think Hauppage needs to spend some time kleening up their naming schema/pictures for the nova 500 series, this gives me a headacke :P

But regarding the "HD" label. I wonder if this label just shows that this is a retail product with the nessesary software codecs... From the Hauppage website on the HD version:
Quote
Included with the WinTV v7 HD application with H.264 dekoder and support for AAC sound. Suitable for Norwegian broadcast

I checked another webstore, and they show a picture of the card with one aerial connector and the HDTV Ready label. I think I have not received what I orderd in this case. Because as meantioned earlier I have two ariel conn. and no HD label either :(

I am posting a question on the Hauppauge forum, to see what they could come up with!

Hmmm well then TD is most likely a newer card (might not be PnP anymore then!). Dual input is strange, they should just have used a splitter. About HD ready, it wouldn't surprise me if it's only the Windows software that is shipped with it. As in any of those cards should be HD capable. Note though that these are just my thoughts, not facts :P Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come along and help out ^^
