0810 Beta 2 upgrade experience...
« on: November 30, 2009, 09:17:30 pm »
Just did an 'apt-get update' on my core only to find a whole bunch of lmce updates.

I checked the webpage and it shows LinuxMCE Beta 2.  Congrats on Beta 2 guys!

I'm going to update my core momentarily and report my progress.

Alright, I was upgrading from Alpha 2.37 and had a minor hiccup during the upgrade.

A mythtv related script has moved from one package to another which has caused an upgrade hiccup.  Here's my experience:

Code: [Select]
# apt-get update
# apt-get dist-upgrade

After downloading for about 45 minutes apt began updating packages but failed, a window opened telling me that "lmce-mythtv-scripts 2.0.0.44.09112922522 had failed to install or upgrade."

So I performed another dist-upgrade and watched the screen as it failed again (and left other packages not upgraded):

Code: [Select]
Unpacking lmce-mythtv-scripts (from .../lmce-mythtv-scripts_2.0.0.44.09112922522_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/lmce-mythtv-scripts_2.0.0.44.09112922522_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/pluto/bin/SaveMythRecording.sh', which is also in package pluto-mythtv-player

Now almost all of the packages have been updated but... I performed another dist-upgrade and watched the screen:

Code: [Select]
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
pluto-mythtv-player: Depends: lmce-mythtv-scripts (>= 2.0.0.44) but it is not installed
Depends: lmce-mythtv-scripts (< 2.0.0.45) but it is not installed
pluto-mythtv-plugin: Depends: lmce-mythtv-scripts (>= 2.0.0.44) but it is not installed
Depends: lmce-mythtv-scripts (< 2.0.0.45) but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

All other packages have been updated at this point, so then I did an "apt-get -f install" and it installed the lmce-mythtv-scripts package successfully.

I used apt-get, "aptitude dist-upgrade" may have been able to deal with the removal/install ordering better, I'm not sure.

I rebooted and am currently waiting for orbiter to regenerate.

After an hour Orbitergen finished and I am left with a black screen with white mouse cursor.  (My heart sank.)  Both my diskless MDs (not yet updated)  were woken with WOL and seem to function properly.

After I was certain all upgrade activity had ceased I rebooted one more time and orbiter came up just fine.  At first glance everything seems okay and I'm going to update my MDs next.  I think I may do a rebuild on them.

Anyways, still up and running...

Hi,

just testing the upgarde from beta1 to beta 2 on my test maschine.

removed the avenard repository before starting.

Now I also get the problem that "SaveMythRecording.sh" is contained in both packages. Only on my system any additional apt-get dist-upgrade did not change anything.

I now did an apt-get -f install and it started processing the database upgrades aso.

Unfortunately i did not log this in a logfile, but at the end it then said :
Code: [Select]
Generating speech for  extension: 301
Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at
        ./generate_users_voicemenu.pl line 41 (#1)
Use of uninitialized value $TEXT in concatenation (.) or string at
        ./generate_users_voicemenu.pl line 120 (#1)
Generating speech for  extension: 302
Generating speech for  extension: 303
1       12/01/09 13:26:47       /usr/pluto/bin/Update_StartupScrips.sh (server)Updating startup scripts
ERROR 1062 (23000) at line 1: Duplicate entry '1-22' for key 1
Adding user_xattr to filesystems that support it and remounting them
/ Ok
Updating IR codes for all devices
Created HAL device '16' under computer '1'

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

the next apt-get dist-upgrade then told me that these packages are still missing :
Code: [Select]
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  lmce-mythtv-scripts
The following packages will be upgraded:
  alsa-base apache2 apache2-mpm-prefork apache2-utils apache2.2-common cups
  cups-bsd cups-client cups-common libapache2-mod-php5 libcups2 libcupsimage2
  libvorbis0a libvorbisenc2 libvorbisfile3 libxine1 libxine1-bin
  libxine1-console libxine1-ffmpeg libxine1-misc-plugins libxine1-x
  linux-sound-base php-pear php5-cli php5-common php5-curl php5-gd php5-mysql
  pluto-mythtv-player pluto-mythtv-plugin pluto-nvidia-video-drivers
  pluto-orbiter pluto-photo-screen-saver pluto-simplephone
  pluto-text-to-speech pluto-x-scripts pluto-xine-plugin tzdata
38 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/42,6MB of archives.

After that I now again did an apt-get -f install and that fixed the "SaveMythRecording.sh" problem. Then I did a (last) apt-get dist-upgrade that wanted to install :
Code: [Select]
The following packages will be upgraded:
  alsa-base apache2 apache2-mpm-prefork apache2-utils apache2.2-common cups
  cups-bsd cups-client cups-common libapache2-mod-php5 libcups2 libcupsimage2
  libvorbis0a libvorbisenc2 libvorbisfile3 libxine1 libxine1-bin
  libxine1-console libxine1-ffmpeg libxine1-misc-plugins libxine1-x
  linux-sound-base php-pear php5-cli php5-common php5-curl php5-gd php5-mysql
  pluto-photo-screen-saver
29 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/16,3MB of archives.

And after that there was no packages to install anymore.

Just now I am rebooting ...

Hmmm, there seems to be a dependency on libvdpau1 >= 0.2 for the mythtv and xine packages, but libvdpau is not in the sources list on my core (which still has it's default sources list from the alpha install).

It's not really a problem to get libvdpau from the avenard repository, but as I understood it the avenard repository is separate from the official linuxmce repository. Am I correct or is my sources.list out of date?

Other than that all the updates have installed on my core. I'll upgrade my MD later this week.

Oh, and I agree with phenigma: Congratulations on the Beta2, and thanks for your hard work!

lmce and avenard are seperate repositories but lmce is using the avenard repositories for nvidia drivers, libvdpau & mythtv.  You should have the avenard 'release' repo in your sources.list.  The lmce repository has also been updated and should automatically be changed during the upgrade to beta2.

Hmm, not sure if that is correctly !? Did you install from the DVD ?
I had the avenard repository - but only because I had added it myself after installing Linuxmce 0810 beta1.

iI now removed "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/avenard.list" again before upgrading to beta2 and there is no sign of any avenard in my install...

Hi,

on my production core that I am upgrading right now there was no problems like tho ones above - did anyone fix something ?

But I have this :
Code: [Select]
The following packages have been kept back:
  libxine1 libxine1-bin libxine1-console libxine1-ffmpeg libxine1-misc-plugins libxine1-x

Is that normal ?

hmm, had quite some problems. Maybe avenrad repository should stay ...

The dist-upgrade remove a good part of linuxmce :
Code: [Select]
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  amarok amarok-engine-xine dragonplayer kubuntu-desktop mythtv-backend
  mythtv-frontend mythtv-transcode-utils pluto-avwizard pluto-mythtv-player
  pluto-nvidia-video-drivers pluto-orbiter pluto-xine-player xine-ui
Did not notice that little part - so lookout for that !!!

Took a little to get the core back on the road.

So , some more feedback.

The newest avenard release is not recommended - it does not really use vdapu - at least not on my system. So I went for the linuxmce version

It seems that we also miss a mythweb in linuxmce repository. So here the packages I am using together with

deb http://www.avenard.org/files/ubuntu-repos intrepid release

- CORE:
Code: [Select]
apt-get install mythtv-backend=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0 mythtv-common=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0 mythtv-database=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0  mythtv-frontend=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0  mythtv-transcode-utils=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0 libmyth-0.22-0=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0
apt-get install mythweb=2:0.22.0-fixes22785-0ubuntu0

- MD :

Code: [Select]
apt-get install mythtv-backend=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0 mythtv-common=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0 mythtv-frontend=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0  mythtv-transcode-utils=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0 libmyth-0.22-0=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0 libmyth-perl=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0 libmyth-python=2:0.22.0-fixes22779-0ubuntu0

I was upgrading from alpha 2.37 to beta2.  I also did a fresh net install on a virtual machine, I'll be testing a fresh DVD install in a virtual machine this evening when I get home from work.

The current installer is adding the avenard 'release' repo during a net or dvd installation.

From pre-install-from-repo.sh and pre-install-from-dvd.sh
Code: [Select]
AddRepoToSources "http://www.avenard.org/files/ubuntu-repos intrepid release"

Just wanted to say thanks to you guys for the new version :)

It is the first time I can play Videos with my MD without tearing and stuttering :)
I did only test for 10 min. more did I not have ;) but it looks very nice. No stuttering and no tearing with vdpau and my Nvidia 8400gs.

Sounds right to me.  I believe the beta1 had only the 'testing' repo by default and needed the 'release' repo added manually and then avenard repo changed and mythtv was upgraded to 0.22 in 'release' pretty much the day beta1 was released...  It was a bit of a clusterf**k which was beyond the control of anyone working on LMCE.

Just to continue my story... I'm trying to troubleshoot a bit of why UI2 is causing X to crash on my EeeBox B202 (intel graphics).  The latest is in this thread: http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=9242.0.
