Atom board as core

Ok, I have been getting conflicting ideas from people about whether a Dual Core Atom board would work as a CORE.

The plan is to have the core & 3 atom based MDs, using a NAS for storage & a HDHomeRun DVB-T for TV.
Core would not be used as hybrid, just for Core duties.

Will or will this not work?

Hi Josh,

Yes this works.... we have a portable system we use for trade shows and situations where our potential customer can't get come into our demo suite. However there are some gotchas using this kind of setup that we have found. Streaming media to multiple MD's/SB's at the same time is no problem at all - 2-3 MD's plus several SB's is no problem at all. We demo with 2 MD's streaming BBC HD 1080i content to two Revo's while streaming two streams to SB's and this works flawlessly.

However any regens or situations where your relying on the pure 'compute' power of the ATOM you will find are the problem areas. These compute intensive activities are really where the ATOM falls a little short. In all other ways its a great way to go for a low energy, quiet & compact Core.

Andrew - are these problems just that the regen takes a long time, or does something break? Also, are you using 330 dual core or 230?

I am running an MSI IM-945GC which is an atom 330 board and I find that orbiter regeneration is not bad.  It usually completes in a minute or two.  That is a quick regen and not a full regen.

Nothing breaks...its just a compute intensive process (I am talking about a 'Full Regen'). We use both 230/270/330 & 520 Atom's. Clearly the 330 has some performance advantage when it comes to compute intensive tasks like a Regen.
