linuxmce.org 2.0
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:10:47 am »
have you ever ask yourself, why you registered on http://www.linuxmce.org?

Now you have the ability to create your own blog/content on linuxmce.org.
You can take this place as a central location to tell the community about your experience about LMCE, show pictures or link to youtube videos.
Have made a tutorial? don't hesitate to post it in the user section of linuxmce and let other participate in it.

Just login to http://www.linumxce.com and go to http://www.linuxmce.com/index.php/talk TALK section.
See you soon.

Hmmm...So do we need to 'register' again if we have already registered on the 'old' site? Are these two sites using different backend DB's?

Does this also mean that personal pages from the Wiki need to migrated, or will that happen automagically?

I don't want to criticise the hard work that's gone in, but I would rather see effort going in to a single login which gives me access to the Forums and the Wiki. Between them, I would suggest those two platforms provide sufficient scope for people to participate in the site. The danger in intoroducing a third (assuming this is a third!) is that the content becomes fragmented and it gets harder to find the information you need / want.

Just my 10 Eurocents

I have to caution (or call attention to) the fact that it seems we may be putting way too much emphasis on the "locked down" "static" site as opposed to the wiki site.  I feel that, while there are good benefits in having our "main" site be professional-looking, engaging and even sexy, there are enormous benefits to continuing to improve and having the wiki and have it be the center for all information. Why? Just look at the "bureaucracy" or hoops we have to go through just to change simple annoying misspellings on the static site.

For documentation and LinuxMCE to grow, we can't have the edits and all information be funneled through one or two individuals putting things up on the site. That right there is the power of a Wiki type of site.

I may be wrong (and I admit I frequently am) but this is just another point of view to keep in mind...

Thus is the clash...

Please understand, the copy that makes up the initial site is merely there to provide consistent, pitch-oriented content for potential users, and as an entry for developers. By its very nature, this site MUST be polished, and must be heavily edited, and thus the bureaucracy is required. The site is not the wiki, the wiki is not the site. And right now, we need a solid, complete front site, more than we need more data in the wiki, in the short term.

So what does this actually mean then?;

If the new site is purely a static 'front end' site then all that needs is an 'editor' who manages it based on a brief 'synthesised' from the community. But the quote above from Murcel appears to describe something other than that... hence the confusion I believe.

All the best

Part of this reaction comes from the fact that we've had such a shitty front site for so long...

Basically, We have a couple of people who have edit privileges on the front site. The copy on this site needs to be fleshed out and complete enough to introduce users and developers to LinuxMCE, providing a combination of well prosed introductory content for users, and links to relevant information and a solid introductory text for developers. The editors were asking for opinions on content they are proposing. It's that simple.

I think the problem is that none of that came across in the original post at all. The initial post in this thread appeared to be soliciting us all to 'register' at the new site and create 'blogs'...it talks about 'logging in'. I cant find how you even do that to be frank... and three other people I just asked could not figure that out either...

In the end, we should work towards unifying the login between the three sites.

Thom,

I for one, and reading this thread others as well, are confused about the "fluid" part(s) of the site.

My question was about this new section and if the intention was to replace parts of the Wiki.

I totally agree that the main front part of the site needs to be polished and be able to compete, not only with other community projects, but laso ideally with commercial projects as well.

I guess my concern is that we end up spreading the information on what people are doing thinly. We have the same problem at work. We had a shared data area, then some bright spark suggested a Wiki, we are about half way through migrating and another "genius" decides Sharepoint is the way to go. Result - you now have three places to search for information, not one!

Currently, (I think) the Forums represent a good place for discussion, whilst the Wiki is the results of those discussions! The problem is that, at the end of a forum-based troubleshooting (or other) discussion, the results don't always make it to the Wiki. This means that you have to search both when researching an issue to see if it's already been addressed. I just don't want us to be adding a third place that needs searching ;)

Sorry to anyway who i had confused with this post.
I just wanted to make a differnet place for "new beginenr" users, to easily post there opinions, videos or whatever.

1. If you registered at the old lmce site, you can but DO NOT have to register again.
2. Like TSCHAK says, the website should be a Entry Point for Beginners, it will provide a way of going deeper if someone wants to
3. IT IS NOT A REPLACEMENT CURRENTLY for anything, maybe just a add-on
4. you logins for wiki and forum are still valid
5. in the near future, there will be a Single Sign On, for all three places and content can and will be accessible from all point and aggregated under one roof.

Sorry again for causing confusion.

M.

I've spoken to murcel. I agree with wierdbeard65. Having too many places for people to post their experiences with LinuxMCE is spreading it too thin. We already have people posting these type of pages in the wiki. Here is an example:

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/User:Bdfoster

We should use the main site for updates on features, builds, news on LinuxMCE (from the team), etc... We should leave user generated content to the forum and wiki.
