Whats wrong with my DVB-T tuning?-Kworld 399U
« on: June 17, 2009, 08:01:28 pm »
I think i have (finally) got my Kworld usb U399 working in 810 (guide to follow if i can get it tuned), but I cannot get it to tune to Belmont or uk-Waltham which is also near by each time i get

WARNING: >>> tuning failed with the
tune to: return above it.

I have tried this for both masts and a bit stuck how to go forward with the fault diagnostics.  (I guess at least i dont have a blank /dev/dvb0/ directory any more now the latest V4l is installed!)

HAving run dmesg after the attempted tune i have found the following;

af9015 : command failed:2
af9013: IC2 read failed reg:d330

A bit higher up the dmesg output the card seems to have been id'd correctly;

DVB: registering adapter 1 front end 0 (afatech AF9013 DVB-T)
MXL5005S:Attached at address 0xc6
dvb-usb:schedule remote query interval 150ms
dvb-usb: Kworld PLusTV Dual DVB-T Stick (DVB-T 399U) successfully initialized and connected.

I am a bit out of my depth now as to how to take this forward to get the card tuning as the system seems to have loaded the card and firmware for the chipset correctly??

usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_af9015
usbcore: registered new interface driver prism54usb

Do you have the firmware file for the af9015 installed?

I believe so, I have a dvb-usb-af9015.fw file in my libs/firmware directory. Do i need it anywhere else or do i have to force it to load somehow?  dmesg seems to show that kubuntu is now identifying the card correctly.

One thing.

Judging form the output you pasted above it seems that the driver is somehow unable to communicate correctly with the tuner (i2c).
I have seen similar behavior with other usb tuners and often it work on another computer leading me to beleive that there are bugs in some usb chip implementations.

You dont´t happen to have another motherboard to test it on just to verify?

Have you searched in linuxtv.org mailinglists re the kworld 399u tuner?
Dont´t have on myself so I don´t know if you will find anything useful on the net about it.
As a start, http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/KWorld_399U_Dual_DVB-T_USB_tuner
Seems there are know issues with this unit. At least in dual tuner mode.

We have it working here on several systems...and we have a few customers with them installed too. We feel its possibly the best dual tuner DVB-T USB stick todate...that is not to say though that you are wrong about it possibly not working as well when used in combination with some motherboards. Tested here on the followoing motherboards under 0710;

Gigabyte i945 motherboard
ASUS P5N7A-VM
ASUS Eee Top
ASUS P5E-VM HDMI

All the best

I will give it a go with my vaio laptop to see if its working.  I guess it could be a dodgy card but i dont have a windows machine to test it on.

Andrew, have you guys looked at getting the Kworld Usb working with 810?  I realise you are really busy but i would be interested to see if you have any success or not, especially if you get chance to look with a motherboard you know the card works with under 710.

Was only trying to give some hints how to nail down what is wrong as the error message he sees have something to do with the driver being unable to communicate with the tuner correctly.

niz, any input on this issue is welcome as its new territory for me and im running out of ways forward! any hint as to a way forwards is well received.

I am struggling to understand how to enable/disable dual tuner mode form the post linked above?!

Andrew can you confirm if you are using dual tuner mode under 0710 and where this is set?

I am just going through the system log files and I am in dual tuner mode (with both adapters listed in /dev/dvb/adapter0 and 1).  From the output of my dmesg log everything seems to be loaded and working, although i am a bit confused with the following line;

dvb-usb: Kwolrd PlusTV Dual DVB-T Stick (DVB-T 399U) successfully initialized and connected.
input: Afatech DVB-T 2 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:04/1/usb4/4-3/4-3:1.1/input/input10
input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.01 keyboard [Afatech DVB-T 2] on usb-0000:00:04.1-3

Am i missing something or is somehow part of the dvb being loaded as a keyboard?

Are you able to post the (relevant) returns from an lsmod on a system with the card working so i can ensure all of the right modules are loading on my machine ( i think they are but worth checking).

I have recomplied and installed v4l today and moved it to a different usb port but get the same response as detailed above when i try to tune it. Very frustrating!

There is no explicit 'twin tuner' mode they are just both automatically detected. See my lsmod output below...this system has a 399U plus two other DVB cards by the way;

Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep dvb
dvb_bt8xx              19076  14
bt878                  12344  1 dvb_bt8xx
bttv                  129044  2 dvb_bt8xx,bt878
dvb_usb_af9015         27552  31
dvb_usb                23564  1 dvb_usb_af9015
dvb_core               90524  2 dvb_bt8xx,dvb_usb

usbcore               138632  7 dvb_usb_af9015,dvb_usb,lirc_mceusb2,usbhid,uhci_hcd,ehci_hcd

Ah ok, I dont suppose anyone has a machine with just a kworld 399U in it?  I have compared andrews output to mine but obviously it quite different as Ive only got the 1 card.

Also, can someone give me a steer as to how I might go forward from here.  I am running out of avenues to pursue as the Kworld is listed in the v4l wiki as fully working?????

Thanks.

Thanks, I will compare that to my system, hopefully that will give me a clue!

If not where else should i be looking for a clue?  Ive ran out of "google" advice on getting this damn thing working now!

Right i might be getting somewhere.  I have manually modprobe loaded the dvb_usb_af9015 and mxl5005s modules.

When i try and tune the following is reported back;

Initial transponder 4900000000 0 2 1 3 0 0 0
Initial transponder 5140000000 0 2 1 3 0 0 0
Initial transponder 5700000000 0 2 1 3 0 0 0
ETC

>>tune to 490000: I999B8 ETC
-tune-to-transponder:I491: ERROR: FE_READ_STATUS failed : 121 Remote I/O error

this is repeated for each of the transponder tunes with the 121 Remote I/O error.

Dmesg returns the following:

mxl5005s I2C write failed
af9015: bulk message failed:-22 (8/70)
af9013: I2C read failed reg d:417

repeated several times with slightly different values for the reg d but the same theme.

Anyone have any ideas? This seems a step forwards slightly.

As an aside the wiki here

http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/KWorld_399U_Dual_DVB-T_USB_tuner

States the card works with kernel 2.6.30 but  UNAME -A shows that the 810 alpha kernel is only 2.6.27-14-generic.

Could this be the issue, or is the kernel version a bit of a smoke screen?

If it is kernel related am i likely to break anything in MCE by upgrading my kernel myself?
