Advantages of using IDE Flash drives?

Hi all... is there any advantage using IDE flash drives and installing LMCE there.. if so what capacity should i go for 1gb, 2gb??? also what folders should be installed onto the ide drive..

LinuxMCE needs at a minimum 30 to 40G of HD space. The OS needs at least that. And then there are the MD images which require at least 10G more or less. I use a 500G drive as my OS drive. Also, if you intend on using MythTV, it also uses the OS drive to record media, at an average of 2.1G/hr for SD content captured on say a pvr 150/250/350/500 card. So ideally for multiple MD's, I have 5, You want at least 250G, add a decent amount of recordings to that, and that is why I have a 500G drive for this purpose. I have a 1TB, 250G, and 80G drive for everything else, DVD rips, downloaded movies, music, etc.

So keep that in mind for your installation.

You must be joking.. 40GB for LMCE? can i not even install /boot to flash drive?

Its no joke, I have an 80gb hard drive for my OS and with 5 MD's it is over half full. Luckily I dont record very many TV shows. I plan on upgrading to at least 250gb in the near future.

So did you use IDE drive for os or partition on SATA drive? Did you RAID any of your drives?

In commercial installations currently we have standardised on 160GB drives for the OS and we do not use these for any media storage at all. We usually only ever RAID the data drives. More usually in anything but the smaller systems we would recommend a separate RAIDED NAS for storage.

So does no media mean your recorded TV programs do not go to this drive also? or is that the only exception to no media on that drive?

No media means... no media whatsoever is stored on the system OS drive.

the same here...

i started with an 80GB HD drive in the core, only for OS and MD's... after adding 4 MD's, the disk was almost full, so i switched to 160GB and i already feel sorry, i didn't switch to a min 250GB drive...

it depends on your needs, but I would recommend at least 120GB

No media means... no media whatsoever is stored on the system OS drive.

I have the OS on a 200GB IDE drive and then a 450Gb SATAII and a 1TB SATAII for storage - those DVD's take up lots of space!!

When you rip media using the 'rip' option in the 'My Drives' screen you are given an option to choose where to store media...choose a drive other than the OS drive and the system keeps this as the default from then on.
