iPhone or Touch as Orbiter
« on: March 18, 2009, 04:08:56 am »
What's the low down on using these, I am about to order some devices and am not sure what to get. I think I might get a new WebDT360 (so it can be dual purposed) and either something like a Nokia N810 or some Touch's.

What would you guys suggest, the Nok, or Apple?

Also, is the Javamo a better interface then the web interface? Is it possible to run the javamo on the touch/iphone after its jail broken and has java installed?

Thanks!

If your intent is to have the best experience with linuxMCE then you will want a device that actually runs the orbiter locally.
My order of preference would be;

Webpad using the padorbiter image (DT360 or similar) - large screen, responsiveness and potential for other uses
Nokia N810 (or older models)
Bluetooth based orbiter - Symbian 60v2, Windows CE or JavaMO (needs JSR82)
Other portable web based orbiter (includes IPhone and webpads not running padorbiter image)

If you wanted an Iphone/Itouch for other reasons then the choice is up to you - it will be somewhat usable but nowhere near as good as the other options. (IMHO)

Does the DT360 run Thoms image? I thought his image only worked on the older 366?
Can a laptop style tablet pc be made to work with the javamo?

Thanks!

I think the iPhone/Touch will be useful once there is a native orbiter app running. I'm working on porting the Orbiter to CocoaTouch, but it will be at least a few weeks before that's available on jailbroken phones and at least two months before it is officially sanctioned by the App Store. Despite being semi-closed systems, Apple's units seem to be very well suited for the task.

The Image does not work with the 360.

It has been modified to work but does not work with the internal wifi nic.

We're about at the same point; right now I'm fleshing out UI choices before going crazy with Interface Builder. I'll send you something more substantial when I have it. Since CocoaTouch can compile C, C++, and Obj-C interchangeably I think it will really just be a matter of creating a new UI and mapping the buttons to existing functions.
