UI1 - MEDIA > Video button not functioning - HOWTO SOLVE?

Hi forum,

Running a new test-system;
mobo = Gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-DS2H
LinuxMCE DVD Build 2
DVB-C = SATELCO EasyWatch PCI DVB-C HDTV

FYI, the DVB-C card got recognized by LMCE, and registered allright, it can be used in MythTV, but it does not show up in Pluto...
After installing dvb-utils and some fiddling with with a basic scan file I have TV generally working.

At the moment using UI1 to keep things as simple as possible, and get main functionality going first.
Now what is strange, and new to me, is that the media > video button on the orbiter does not react...

At first I thought the hybrid/core was still busy managing external share data.
I had no external media visible.
After adjusting user data and password, I now have audio visible (the public share uses LMCE folder layout)
Strange enough, video will not respond....

If I pop in a DVD in the DVD-drive video starts playing allright...

Also using a remote XP-Orbiter acts the same - no media video button reaction either...

What can I do to check on this?
Can I check some log file? Or even 'tail' a command log with ssh?

Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

Hi,

My Karma has learned that there are some long toed people here on the forum...
Therefore I try to give as detailed information as possible...
Allthough it is often not very clear to myself...
Perhaps someone with guru skills could write up a small script to include all necessary details to include with posts or help requests?

I got this information here:

Any idea how to tackle this non-responsive button?

Regards,

Erwin

You just need to report the version that you downloaded - in this case I think it is just the normal release version 0710RC2, but for full info, it is best to report whether it was installed via DVD or CD and if it is i386 or AMD64 (32bit or 64bit, not what brand of CPU as it can be either)

Strange, can't really help you on your problem. The first thing I would suggest is regenerating the Orbiter, the last thing I would suggest is rebuilding... but I'm sure there are other steps you could try in between!

(btw, I think I have only ever used "smite" once, and that was because the person was being deliberately and willfully stupid and irritating; and I was hung over and grumpy! I try only to use "applaud"!)

Lexje

Not a problem, thanks for answering anyway :-)
I must admit at times I have been 'confused' to say the least by the numbering / version system...
Also I have a lot of discs lying around, you probably know how this grows (out of hand...)
I suppose with rebuilding you mean a complete reinstall?

colinjones

yes, complete reinstall - if there is a problem with your current installation, then this is the most sure-fire way of resolving it, albeit a nuisance!

Try the regen first. If that doesn't fix it, you could monitor the Orbiter's log file whilst you click on the button and check that it is detecting it and what it is doing...

As Colin has already suggested do a full regen... now the best way to do this currently is from Web Admin -> Wizard -> Devices -> Orbiters

No on the Wizard Orbiters page dont be tempted to use the 'Regen All' button at the top of that page... it does not do a full regen currently. Use the green 'Full Regen' button under each of your Orbiters to kick off the full regen... this is actually faster anyway as each regen process runs on the MD in question rather than sequentially on the Core.

If that does not fix the problem... then its a reinstall I guess :-(

All the best

Logged that in Trac?

Andrew, Collin,

Thanks for your efforts.
A full regen did not solve the problem.
It's not a problem at all to do a fresh reinstall, however, I would prefer to at least more clearly identify this issue, if it were only to learn from it...
I've been looking into /var/log/pluto for relevant logfiles, but none seem to specifically pertain to the orbiter's device number, I only find Orbitergen.log

I'm trying another way at the mo;
I'm trying to get the AVwizard up and have it change to UI2...
But as this system has a MSI N9400GT video card with 3 outputs, this is not obvious at all, and I don't want to lose anymore Karma :-)

I'm not giving up yet - Will keep you posted, and, will post in TRAC if unable to solve..

Thanks guys!

We've passed on a bunch of fixes/patches to Thom already... this is covered by one of those ;-)

Okay - will end it here:
AVwizard did a problematic change to UI2

However, this does ONLY confirm the problem!
I have now UI2, but the Media -> Video button remains non-responsive...

Hmmm... well make sure you have the 710  release DVD as I can confirm that this problem does not exist on that DVD.

Re the 9400GT... we use the ASUS equivalent card. You will find that if you use the DVI connector and choose 'DVI/HDMI' as the output connector when the AVwizard runs (ie when you get to the possibly blank initial screen press the '1' button to select the DVI connector) you will have no problems with this card. Since currently the nVidia/Alsa drivers dont handle audio over HDMI reliably there is no loss at all in using the DVI port (100% the same video quality... just no sound).

See the wiki here for info on using the AVwizard; http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard

All the best

BTW and FYI I am running nvidia's new(est?) driver:
Last login: Wed Feb 18 13:41:47 2009 from 192.168.80.10
linuxmce@dcerouter:~$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module  180.29  Wed Feb  4 23:44:25 PST 2009
GCC version:  gcc version 4.1.3 20070929 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.2-16ubuntu2)
linuxmce@dcerouter

Andrew, I'm not clear on your latest post:
Do you mean I don't have to report this in TRAC?

Also thanks for your input on your using the ASUS equivalent;
Question: When I set up from the DVD install, LMCE loads the nvidia driver allright (I guess) but, on my 24" widescreen, the GUI is absolutely and totally UNREADABLE (completely blurred - otherwise seemingly okay as far as size and general layout is concerned)
I've even tried connecting a normal 19" LCD to it, but can only remedy this 'BLUR' by installing one of the newest stock nvidia drivers.
Do you recognize this situation?

Thx,

Erwin

A couple of questions to straighten things out:
I'm trying to identify the version of the DVD install I have;
1. Is there some way to find the LMCE version info?

I found Kubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" - Release i386 (20071016.1) in the /.disk/info file...

2. Does LMCE do an update over the internet (automatically) at the moment, after say, a clean DVD install?
I remember on several occasions seeing errors passing by when doing apt-get update like these:
Err http://deb.linuxmce.com 20dev_ubuntu/main Packages
