Some KNX questions before installation
« on: February 01, 2009, 09:36:18 pm »
Hello all,

at the moment I am using the ETS3 software and eibd to control devices in my home. The eibd runs on a router and the ETS3 speaks over KNX/IP with the router. The router is connected over USB to the buscoupler. Now I read about LinuxMCE and find it very interesting and hope I can use it for my home. Before I install everything I want to check if all the things I would like to do with it is actually possible.

I read in the wiki that LinuxMCE can only talk to the KNX over a RS232 interface. Is that true? At the moment I have the router with eibd running and I send the eib telegrams to it wireless. The router then sends the telegram on the bus using a usb buscoupler. I want to keep it that way. So I want to talk wireless to the router over LinuxMCE. Is this possible? Is there something similar to KNX/IP in LinuxMCE?

Thanks and greetings,

Benjamin

Do you need more information or did I ask wrong? I used the search function but could not find any answers. I found this page in the wiki: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/EIB(guigolum_version) but the I can't grab the necessary file mentioned there because the link is dead.

Maybe someone has tried it already or knows that LinuxMCE defiantly does not support KNXnet/IP and that there is no workaround?

Best regards,

Benjamin

Benjamin,

the lack of response is some kind of indication.

I do not know of a KNX/IP implementation for lmce

guigolum_version is based on eibd. That should do KNX/IP as well.

Hi there,

I have been looking at using Linux MCE in coordingation with a KNX system.

did you have any joy in your installation?

i have found http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/EIB which explains a bit, and it does look possible, but not sure.

In order to get linuxmce controlling the knx system, do you need ets running on the linuxmce pc or can it pick up the data from the IP network (if a knx/ip router is installed)? is it possible to do this linuxmc control of knx via IP using a wireless connection? also if i don't buy a knx/ip router, can i just use the usb programming interface?

also are there any visuliation packages for linuxmce that i can use to view the status and history of my knx network, such as electricity meter readings and current and past temperature logs of my house?

cheers

We have an alternate implementation here http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Bash_dce_knx

We are using this in our customer installations currently...the current version is not IP based however.

For KNX over IP you could use the binary here http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=5648.msg54408#msg54408 on 32bit 0810 and configure eibd to use EIBnet/IP.

Hello,

can you confirm that it will also work with usb ? RS232 is old timer.

eibd also supports usb interfaces, for more information please consult the eibd home page.

br Hari

I see that KNX also support encapsulation over IP

"As documented in the KNXnet/IP specifications, KNX telegrams can also be transmitted encapsulated in IP telegrams. In this way, LAN networks as well as Internet can be used to route or tunnel KNX telegrams. In this way, IP routers are an alternative to USB data interfaces respectively TP line or backbone couplers. In the latter case, the normal TP backbone is replaced by a fast Ethernet based line."

http://www.knx.org/knx-standard/communication-media/

Is it possible to use that in place of usb with linuxmce ?

Ok, but is it possible to put the ethernet cable with knx/ip into the ethernet card, and control KNX ? I suppose no ?

It's needed to use somewhere an usb connector ?

ryuma,

please don't take it the wrong way, but from your posts, it clearly shows that you did not put a lot of effort into researching how EIB/KNX work. This is not a LinuxMCE issue, but a KNX/EIB issue.

To control KNX/EIB you need a gateway, which translates stuff into KNX/EIB. There are interfaces which connect the KNX network to "something" else, like a TCP/IP network or the USB port. Examples can be found on this page http://mdtautomation.de/KNX.html  - Whether or not the USB interface works, I don't know. The TCP/IP interface probably works. I have one, and will give it a test shortly. To check whether or not it works, you need to get in contact with the eibd guys.

Do a google search for eibd and compatibility, and I am sure you will get lots of helpful information.

As Posde says you either need a KNX/EIB to IP gateway or alternatively you could use SIM-KNX module to achieve the same interconnect - http://www.opternus.com/en/tapko.html. The have a USB or serial interface that connects to your Core or an MD and a connection to the KNX bus too. We have a few installations using the SIM-KNX and they work perfectly well.

However as Posde says it sounds like you need to do more research on SIM-KNX and educate yourself a little before attempting a LinuxMCE system with KNX integrated.

All the best
