Pluto 2.0.0.38 with PVR-350, no live TV
« on: March 15, 2006, 04:06:53 am »
I can not get live TV with my PVR-350, just snow.  I'm wondering what driver others are using that have this same Hauppauge card.  Hardware and/or connections are not an issue in my system and I doubt that configuration is either as I have been running KnoppMyth on this system prior to this latest attempt at Pluto.  I even put KnoppMyth back on it to verify that I was doing the Mythtv-setup identical.  So now I'm back to Pluto 2.0.0.38 and MythTV 0.19 and can't get a live TV picture.  Here is what I did (continues below this xterm output). I tried installing ivtv-0.4.3 but using the generic install method it fails with:

login as: root
Using keyboard-interactive authentication.
Password:
Last login: Tue Mar 14 20:29:56 2006
dcerouter_4114:~$ ls
dbootstrap_settings  install-report.template  ivtv-0.4.3  ivtv-0.4.3.tar.gz
dcerouter_4114:~$ cd ivtv-0.4.3
dcerouter_4114:~/ivtv-0.4.3$ make && makeinstall
make -C driver all
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/ivtv-0.4.3/driver'
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.15-pluto-2-686/build M=/root/ivtv-0.4.3/driver modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.15-pluto-2-686/build: No such file or directory.  Stop.
make: Entering an unknown directorymake: Leaving an unknown directorymake[1]: *** [all] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/ivtv-0.4.3/driver'
make: *** [all] Error 2

So I tried the Debian install instructions for ivtv but it failed for packages dependencies that could not be met, sorry I don't have a copy of the failed packages at this time.

My last attempt to get the drivers installed was to use pluto-admin and get them from yttron, so that's what I am using now which is what I am getting the snow picture with.

Here is my dmesg tumer output if of any value:

dcerouter_4114:/etc/apt$ dmesg | grep tuner
tveeprom 0-0050: tuner model is LG TAPE H001F MK3 (idx 68, type 47)
tuner 0-0061: chip found @ 0xc2 (ivtv i2c driver #0)
ivtv0: i2c attach to card #0 ok [client=(tuner unset), addr=61]
tuner 0-0061: type set to 47 (LG NTSC (TAPE series))

Thanks for any help,

probably not your problem, but when upgrading ivtv you have to power off machine completely, so new firmware can get loaded...

Knowing that it should work is a good starting point.  Which ivtv firmware did you use? or from ivtv or from another location?  Also what version?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Sadly, I've made quite some compilations of ivtv and I remember that mythtv started to work only some time ago for me (various settings problems). So I'm not sure anymore what I do use on regular binary basis, and what are leftovers from before. But can check for more info if you need any specific infos ...

In the end there are 2 messages that I believe are showing a problem, i.e "tuner type not set".

In my syslog messages i get those lines each and every time I try to change to a different channel in MythTv.

Reading around on forums it seems it could be related to some mixed version of ivtv driver, but I did not install anything but ivtv driver that comes with Pluto (that claims to be 0.4.2).

I tried both ivtv firmware from yttron and from ivtvdriver.org with same unlucky result.

Any idea on how get rid of this snow ?
Should  Pluto run with MythTv out of the box, or are there some known issues that may suggest some manual hack?

Thanks and regards
Marco

SOLVED - at least for me ...
« Reply #5 on: April 04, 2006, 11:43:07 am »
Hi all

just after my previous post I made one more attempt ... and this time I was lucky.
I recalled that with kernel 2.6.15 some of the kernel modules can be used instead of the ivtv supplied ones.

Given the fact that in my case tuner module was giving errors, I tried to load tuner.ko from /lib/modules/.../kernel/drivers/media/video (instead of the one in /lib/modules/.../extra).
Things worked like a charm, no more tuner error and now I have Mythtv up and running.

Hi,

I also seem to have tuning problems on my pvr 350. Yesterday I noticed that all my recordings since April are just snow and nothing else. Since I already changed names of modules, I'm nost sure anymore which one is right. I have this :
Code: [Select]

dcerouter_260:~$ ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.15-pluto-2-686/extra/tuner*
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 970268 2006-03-27 09:16 /lib/modules/2.6.15-pluto-2-686/extra/tuner.ko
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 970184 2006-02-22 03:27 /lib/modules/2.6.15-pluto-2-686/extra/tuner.ko.old

dcerouter_260:~$ ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.15-pluto-2-686/kernel/drivers/media/video
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 56953 2006-01-31 14:55 /lib/modules/2.6.15-pluto-2-686/kernel/drivers/media/video/tuner.ko.saved

Which tuner.ko works for you ?

Regards,

Rob.

Hi Rob

the working module (at least for me) is exactly:
Code: [Select]

/lib/modules/2.6.15-pluto-2-686/kernel/drivers/media/video/tuner.ko.saved

its size is 56953 and it is dated 2006-01-31.

To be sure to avoid any issue with other missing modules at loading time, I copied it into /lib/modules/2.6.15-pluto-2-686/extra (after renaming the existing one)

I don't know whether this is the most elegant way to solve the issue, nevertheless things are working fine since beginning of april.
