mATX motherboard with HDMI_SPDIF header
« on: November 05, 2008, 03:23:19 pm »
Hi,

I'm looking for a right motherboard for my new core/hybrid. It should be mATX and should have HDMI_SPDIF header to pass audio via HDMI cable. I found one. It's ASROCK ALIVENF7G-FULLHD R3.0. It has integrated GeForce 7050 with embedded HDMI Audio which supports HDMI signal through DVI-D port by using DVI to HDMI adapter.

Does somebody use that motherboard or maybe other one with HDMI_SPDIF header?

Any suggestions are very appreciated!

TIA

Well, what about ALIVENF7G-FULLHD R3.0? Based on its specification it should support hd audio through dvi-d.

Nite man.
to my best knoledge, and I might be mistaken here, DVI is not able to transfer any kind of audio, and the adaptor would not help in this case.
Your only bet would be a real HDMI connector on the mobo which is physicaly able to transmit audio provided the driver supports it.
Again I might be mistaken here, so it might be a good idea to double check before investing in this board.

I have a gigabyte  GA-MA78GPM-DS2H and GA-M78SW-S2H. While both of these boards have HDMI and DVI ports. I was able to send audio to my TV via a DVI to HDMI adapter plug. I wasn't actually trying to get sound, and was suprised to hear it. But I can confirm that it is possible!

I have to say this was while using Vista MCE.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Jamie

Well I know that DVI cannot bring sound. It's used for video only. But what does mean that sentence from ASROCK ALIVENF7G-FULLHD specification:
Quote
HDMI SPDIF header, providing SPDIF audio output to HDMI VGA card, allows the system to connect HDMI digital TV / projector / LCD devices

wrong, both use TMDS. The physical connector has nothing to do with what you can transport over TMDS. You can e.g. have HDCP on DVI, this is no HDMI invention :-)

Hari, can you clarify, please, it will be possible to have sound over DVI in the ASROCK ALIVENF7G-FULLHD motherboard? Or it's better to buy some MB with HDMI?

btw, there are also external boxes to inject a S/P DIF signal into TMDS: http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=3570

That's solution but ... I'm thinking to add 100 - 200$$ and buy sound projector in that case ;)
