Hard lockups more than just thermal problem

Ok guys, I have another thread where I asked about my hard lockups and that one ended with me thinking that my lockups were a thermal problem.  Well, I'm back to say that there must be more going on than thermal problems.

As of right now, I have the side of my computer off and a box fan blowing air into it.  Yet my core still locks up when I leave it for a few hours.  I think that since I've reinstalled so many times, only once in a long time, an install does not lock up.  So here is my question:

What are the common causes of lockups?

P.S. I have turned the screensaver off

Main causes:

  • bad hardware
  • incompetence
  • proprietary drivers

well, i've tested all the hardware I can.  I suppose I could try swapping out the mobo.  Which piece of hardware could be the culprit though?

I used a motherboard that used the forcedeth NIC driver and that caused a lot of hard lockups for me. Changing to a different motherboard solved my problem. I've been using the M2N-SLI Deluxe for quite a few months now with no hard lockups.

Yours is also likely a specific hardware/driver issue

I think I'll just hold out until the next release.  I saw a huge jump in my hardware compatibility from 0704 to 0710.  hopefully 8.10 will resolve this problem.

had some old drivers for a wireless card that caused my lockup problems.  recompiled the newer drivers and it ended

Yep... I think thats good advice.

Our demo Core is regularly up for 8-10 weeks at a stretch without reboot. When it rebooted is only ever because we have upgraded it or changed the config in someway. It is currently running on a an Intel 915 based motherboard.

So, I got a new motherboard and my issue is gone.  I still don't know which aspect of my old mobo was the problem, but now things are golden.  Thanks for the advice guys.
