Hauppauge HVR 1600 installation

So, I am a Linux MCE freak, I love it. I just purchased a Hauppauge HVR1600 because the Myth tv page said it was the next generation version of the PVR 150 chipset and noted that it works, just not explicitly supported. So I thought, "Why try to track down a Standard Def 150 card when I can go with a High Def 1600". Anyways since it was delivered a couple of days ago I have been fighting non stop to get it to work. I am seriously considering throwing it in the box and sending it back then getting a PVR 150 on ebay.

I am posting here as my last resort hoping someone can help this Linux Noob get the 1600 working.

I am using Lin MCE 0714 RC2

Here's what I've done so far. I went to the Myth TV wiki which was about the only info I could find and followed the instructions explicitly, however I think maybe they left out a step thinking someone on the wiki would already know how to do it. When I follow the steps everything goes fine until I run "sudo modprobe cx18" when I did this it gave me some errors saying it couldn't be initialized. When I run "dmesg | grep cx18" I get.

It seems like I just need to possibly set the latency higher which is what the guide said, but they give no directions on how to do this. If I could get this thing working I would be soooooo happy. Otherwise I get to pay a 15% restocking fee at newegg and try my luck at finding a PRV 150 that really has a 150 chipset and not a 1600 chipset.

Seriously, if you want high def, I would say just get an HDHomeRun. It plugs right into the network and is plug and play.

the HDhomerun looks really interesting, Does it stream well and smooth on the network while running the thin client media directors at the same time?

I might get a PVR 150 for now and get a HDhomerun after christmas sometime.

yes. I simultaneously record two streams from it into mythtv over the network without a problem, while viewing from multiple media directors.

Hi,

Was actually about to ask for help on the same kind of thing..

I live in Africa and the only TV that makes sence this side of the world is Satellite TV, except its encumbered with encryption - Irdeto2 to be exact.  Now with the lack of availability of the former Haupauge analog cards, whats the best option i can use that will allow me to connect to my STB via S-Video or Component-IN?

I just wish the STBs had a Firewire port, that would be heaven! or maybe my best bet is buying a network or USB/Firewire video capture device thats compatible to MythTV?

Driver support for the Hauppauge HD-PVR is pending. It works in a very alpha form at the moment, and lots of work left to be done..but as soon as we have a stable driver running in the kernel, we'll create a device template etc for it.

Support Status    Works with MythTV 0.21, but not explicitly supported

While LinuxMCE-0710 uses a patched MythTv 0.20, so you'll probably have to wait for the next version in order to get that card going.

Furthermore the cx18 kernel module in the current version might be to old as well.

I've got the 1600 in a box and ready to send back. I'll go ahead and find one of the PVR series. Will a 250, 350 or 500 work as easily as a 150? I was thinking a 500 so I'll have dual tuners with one card.

Once the HVR line works in subsequent versions of Linux MCE I might get another one.
