I am a long time mythtv user, and decided to blow everything away and give LinuxMCE a good shot.

I cleaned and reformatted, and installed Kubuntu, Hardy. Grabbed the CD's kicked off the install from ISO's, and got the error that the CD1 could not be cached. A little more reading, so maybe LinuxMCE JUST DOES NOT WORK with hardy - that could be the case. Why did I choose the CD's, as my system partition, is actually two disks in RAID1 configuration, with LVM. So I like things the way I have them setup.

OK, so that did not work, no worries, grab the RC2 DVD, burn to DVD and start the install.
Very straight forward, the only thing, is my machine is in the basement, no audio and shocking Video card, and I only want it to be a core. The DVD install, only lets me install both Core & Media Director. The wizard video was all over the place, I eventually tried at 800x600 and that came in, the "Ctrl-Alt-+/-" do not work to alter the resolution.

After the reboot, and the wizard, the LinuxMCE status screen, the fonts were so big, I could not actually read any of them, and had no idea what was going on. I tried resizing the window, to no avail.
The mythtv config was dead, during the install when I tried to add my cable boxes, the list was blank, there were no items at all in the list to choose from. (I have two cable boxes in the basement, with two hauppage 250's and the M$ IR blaster to control them.)
When I did eventually get to the web interface, every item I tried to add, IP camera, Receiver, etc, nothing would add. This maybe due to user error - but frustration was beginning to set in.

The above was 5 install tries. I am back to MythTV for now, but am going to keep a close eye on LinuxMCE.
I am just not sure why all the docs point to the configuration of a Core, yet the DVD install does not allow this, but the CD's do.

Sorry you experinced problems... but you really do need to read this wiki page at least before installing http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installation_Guide

LinuxMCE is a very complex and large install (MythTV for example is just one part of the installation) and it  has very specific hardware and setup requirements. You need to be aware of these and take these on-board before attempting an install.

All the best

Whew Andrew, I actually got a little shock thinking that I had not read a very important page on the site that would have explained something major that I forgot, alas, nope, I read the wiki page quite well.
On the page you referenced, there is no mention of getting the core going with the DVD install, nor is there any mention of huge fonts on the LinuxMCE status window, there is no reference on what to do if your equipment is not listed, and so on.
As I already have a very very complex environment, with multiple TV cards, 3 'media-directors', cable boxes, UIRT's and so on, I kinda hope I know what I am doing.

I do agree with you, it is complex, no doubt about that, also in reference to others that seem to have tried and left, as noted from this forum.

Would you say that a suggested method is to install Kubuntu, Gutsy, then install the 2 cd's via iso? Is that in your experience more solid? That is my single variable, the DVD did not, but I did not try the DL version, just the 4Gb version. I am more than happy to persist, the LinuxMCE sounds great, but it has to install for me to use it.

I would say that DVD is the preferred install method.
I have done several installs, and everytime the dvd way fails it was because of a bad disc or bad md5 checksum on the downloaded iso.
Check md5 checksum on the isos you download.

What kind of hardware do you have? (mb, graphics, audio card, network card(two of them), etc).
The hauppauge 250 is supported out of the box. (donĀ“t use them myself since I use a dvb based system here)

If you read that page "quite well", then why are you trying to install LinuxMCE-0710 on top of Kubuntu-8.4?

Instructions usually work so much better if you actually do read and follow them...

There is an awful lot of aggression on this forum, just reading some posts. You guys need to take some tranquilizers!
Save your sarcasm for someone who may care! It is a sure sign of immaturity.

You will note, I did not harp nor ponder on that 8.04 issue. But when there is a later a great version, why not try it! So I had issues, I moved on straight away.

I did however notice, after reading much about the user Sparky, his problems seem to be the same as mine, mmm, makes me think that there maybe a graphics/resolution issue. My monitor is a 1280x1024, which is no TV standard that I know of.
He had large font issues as well, if I cannot read the window, because the fonts are so large, then I cannot change the settings to not autostart the MD. The main thing, is I am still trying to install a headless chicken, in the basement, so forget all the ritzy gui's and so on, I just want to get the core installed.

Anyway, when folks take pot shots, you get no where, so lets drop this thread!

Funny how defensive some people get when somebody points out their story doesn't add up.
