Cannot login after a failed LinuxMCE instal
« on: May 29, 2008, 09:13:27 pm »
Hi, wanted to have a try of LinuxMCE, so installed Kubunto 7.1.0. as a dual boot partition on an XP system. Invoked the LinuxMCE installer using the CD's - took a few hours but it eventually said failed to load MySQL server - which I have learned is due to a bad mirror.

tried again today but will not let me past the login screen - it accepts the password, but just get a blank screen after a 20-30 seconds the login screen reappears.

Please could you give me some ideas to try to fix the problem as I don't want to do the whole install thing again

Hi,

I had some problems a while ago trying to setup XP/Unbuntu dual booting on a machine.

I thought I'd try a XP/Unbuntu mix.

I was using XP and the DVI port with an ATI 1650 video card.

I found that I had to switch from the DVI port to the VGA port because of the same screen login issue.

I never did figure out how to get Unbuntu to work with the DVI port.

Didn't really matter because I went back to XP/Fedora on the system which ran just fine on the DVI port.

Hope this helps. :)

Hi Pigdog, i don't think its to do with the graphics card (don't have dvi) as it does'nt stay blank - it reverts to the login screen again

O.K. that was a try.  Did the same thing, returned to login on my DVI port.

Then you are using the VGA port.

And there is no beeping after you login when the screen is black?  Just checking.

So, how did you set up your installation?

Did you set this PC to be a core only or a hybrid?

Did you set it up to act primarily as a PC - Ubuntu starts by default, or, as a dedicated LinuxMCE box?

Hi,

What video card are you using?  Make and model please.

You could have a bad install but it could be a problem with the xorg.conf file.

Search the forums for information on xorg.conf, video card, etc.  The default display setting is VESA.

When you are initially booting up you should see a message like...

GRUB Loading stage 1.5

Grub loading, please wait
Press 'ESC' to enter the menu.

Hit the ESCAPE key during this point to get to the boot menu.  Select recovery mode.

The xorg.conf file is in directory /etc/X11.

It's a starting place.

Hope this helps.
