Suggestions for a good remote other then Fiire Cheif
« on: March 18, 2008, 02:50:41 pm »
Ok, So I finally have Myth working the way it should, Thanks to everyone who did all the work finding that -V bug.
Now that everything is working I need a good, easy to set up, Dependable remote for LMCE. Not looking to spend very much so I don't want to shell out the $150 for the Fiire Cheif. Anyone have any suggestions? Links are also helful.

Thank you

Dustin

I use the Gyration GYR310 remote, which is identical to the Fiire Cheif, less the special firmaware. These run $70 at circuit city http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Gyration-Universal-Remote-Control-for-PC-GYR3101US/sem/rpsm/oid/178884/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Although it lacks some of the custom functionality of the cheif, I have wiki-fied instructions to get more use out of it. This info is here http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Using_the_Gyration_Remote_GYR3101US_%28Non-Fiire_Chief%29

If you follow these instructions, it becomes quite MythTV friendly. I also use a standard Microsoft MCE remote, which I purchased on e-bay with the USB transceiver for about $16 shipped. While it does not have the gyro mouse ability, it is fully supported in LMCE, just do a quick search on e-bay for the MCE Remote.

Hope this helps.

Welcome aboard!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion.

Does anyone know if LMCE supports the Windows MCE Keyboard?

Here is a link.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Microsoft-ZV7-00009-Remote-Keyboard-for-Windows-XP-MCE_W0QQitemZ380006507530QQihZ025QQcategoryZ15389QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If so, can I use the Windows MCE Remote and the Keyboard at the same time?

Yes. The keys on this keyboard are configured to do the same thing as the MCE remote. If you have the range, this is a good option as well. Sometimes, I wish I had a keyboard on my core/hybrid, rather than using an orbiter for web browsing.

A note on that particular auction, it does not come with the receiver you will have to get one, or use a USB-UIRT.

I ordered one of those Gyration remotes from Circuit City the other day and went to pick it up tonight, and the lady informed me that the price had dropped $20 and gave me a refund for that amount.

So I picked up 2 more and cleaned them out.  At $49.96 each, these seem like a real bargain, and I just so happen to have 3 rooms I want to put MDs in.  ;D

IR lights required for that one though (right?)  Not that those are hard to rig up, but it's also a bluetooth remote.  Just for the heads up  ;)

I have the Gyro remote and I like it but I had to send it back to Gyration because the gyro has failed causing the air mouse function to stop.  My wife accidently dropped it and this probably caused the failure. They are sending me a new one once they receive the old one. Since they are in California and I'm in Florida the shipping time is going to take a week each way.

Quick question pertaining to the wiki instructions for it. Where it says:

>"Now after creating the file, we need to make sure it is loaded when LMCE starts up. To do this add the >following as root to /usr/pluto/bin/lmce_launch_manager.sh "

>sudo vi /usr/pluto/bin/lmce_launch_manager.sh

Is it the shell script on the Core I modify or the script on the MD where the remote is used?

I was able to order a Microsoft MCE keyboard and Remote in a bundle off of eBay for $53.00.It also came with the IR blaster.
It should be here anytime now. Hopefully setup goes smoothly. Is there anything I should know? common problems? Or is this pretty straight forward?

So, I got my Microsoft remote and keyboard with the IR Receiver/blaster.
I was just wondering if anyone know if there is a place on the wiki or some known setup that will allow me to use the mouse toggle on the keyboard to control the cross hair pointer on LMCE?
