7.10 beta 3 wont boot after install (odd problem i think)
« on: February 11, 2008, 09:28:05 pm »
Hi i have just installed 7.10b3 onto a clean disk from a DVD and after install it just doesn't boot right. I have not found this problem anywhere else so anyway :

GRUB starts as normal.

Kubuntu loading screen is also normal.

The cursor then blinks and shows a text screen with the message :

Code: [Select]
Starting up
Please Wait...

ubuntu 7.10 dcerouter tty1
dcerouter login

2 seconds later, oddly the screen refeshes with the cursor blinking and then says :

Code: [Select]
Reloading open BSD secure shell server's configuration sshd
...Done

The screen refreshes, the curor blicks again for about two seconds and the screen goes blank with no rgb input. I though this might be the AV Wizard but i hear no sound out my monitor speaker. After trying the button combinations on the sticky thead (1,7) it does nothing as pressing any key will bring up :

Code: [Select]
Reloading open BSD secure shell server's configuration sshd
...Done

dcerouter login

Annoyingly the screen goes to "cursor then blank" as before every few (3 or 4) or seconds then going back to the same screen. Note that if i am halfway though typeing something the screen will go to blank, i will press any key and it will load at that point. Nothing gets reloaded. I tried using the "linuxmce" on both username and password and after that i get the usual "Last login ect... Ubuntu comes with NO WARRENTY..." message.

then

linuxmce@dcerouter:~$

and goes into command line, still blacking every two seconds. I dont know what to do at this point as I have no idea how to use the command line execpt in the terminal in ubuntu. I am not a PC noob, but i have only used ubuntu for about a month. I really need some help.

Anyway heres my PC specs if you need them (Note, I custom built it) :

Gigabyte S-series GA-P35DS3/S3 - Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo 4400 - CPU
Nvidia Geforce 8400GS - GPU
Western Digital IDE 40GB - Hard drive (I know its not this because i had a similar problem with the same install on a 500GB Sata II Western Digital HDD)
2GB Corsair DDR2 RAM
OEM Monitor (No branding) upto 1280x1024 with built in speakers
ASUS DVD-RW Drive (could that be the problem maybe? A corrupt disk?)
Realtek ethernet ports built in to motherboard (Not being used - showed many errors during install)
Zyxel USB wifi dongle

I dont think i missed out anything. Just ask if i have. Please help

  Hi,

it  seem to me like  AVWizard is trying to start but is aint able to.
try removing both  /etc/X11/xorg.conf and xorg.conf.pluto.avwizard

it this does not work try killing the Start_X.sh script and install the right  driver for your graphic card.

there is a nice  Diplay driver page on the wiki you can follow.

 hope this  helps,

Rafik

One way or another, X is trying to start and looks like it is failing which is why it is going back to the console, then it tries again and again. Login (probably easiest with an ssh session from another computer - using PuTTY for instance), and read your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. It should tell you what is going wrong. Possibly driver issues given you are using an 8400...

Ok i removed xorg.conf and xorg.conf.pluto.avwizard. AVWizard started but it hung after page one. now goes in to avwizard then hangs and reverts to console. Heres the Xorg.x.log files (wont attach for some reason), Dont know what it all means.

Have you tried switching the video outputs of your card. If the AV wizard is running, then it may be directong to the wrong video card output. You may have to switch outputs, and resolutions using the AV Manager wiki document, the most important part is here:

 Keys for choosing a connector:

 1: DVI
 2: VGA
 3: Component
 4: Composite
 5: S-Video

And for the resolution

 Keys for choosing a resolution:

 6: 640x480
 7: 1024x768
 8: 720p
 9: 1080i
 0: 1080p

I had to use number 5 and number 6 to get it to display properly, from the svideo port on my nvidia card, to my 42" Projection TV.

Hope this helps.

Thanks but its definatly not that. The av wizard usually hangs after that stage, also i cant change the resolution or it also hangs.

I installed the nvidia drive but it didnt do anything. After running AVWizard nothing happens. Just goes to console. If i restart then i have to delete xorg.conf and xorg.conf.pluto.wizard again before it will work, And even then i have to go back to the AVWizard. So there's really no way out of it.

Try configuring a basic xorg.conf manually as described here: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers.

Is there any closure on this topic? It seems I am having the same problem after ditching the onboard ATI Xpress 200 for a GeForce 8400gs.

I have the monitor hooked up to the VGA output on the card, the onboard card disabled in BIOS and the Video option set to PCI-E.

After making the funny beep noise I can press 1-5 and they all do the exact same thing. The VGA monitor comes on, shows what the OP posted, then turns back off (Power Save mode).
