Instalation hanging?
« on: February 04, 2008, 10:23:12 am »
I'm a complete novice when it comes to Linux, but I've been playing around with computers for the last 25 years and simple networking for the last 5 years.

This project started out with the idea of building a simple NAS that I could use as a media server.  I intended to go with FreeNAS, but decided to try to build it as a dedicated LMCE Core to make it easier to access my media later on.  I downloaded the Quick Install DVD from the link here: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Mirrors, burned it to a disk, then pulled the DVD ROM drive out of my primary system to load the software.  It all goes in fine, I get through the initial setup, then I get to a line

Starting Process /usr/pluto/bin/StartCoreServices.sh
Please be patient... This may take a while...

and it doesn't seem to have progressed at all in the last 24 hours.

During instalation, I did see an error flash by saying that it was unable to start the SQL server because a partition was too small.  I'm trying to install the OS to an 8GB Compact Flash card on IDE channel 1.  I think this might be what is giving me problems, but I couldn't find anything indicating how much drive space the OS needs anywhere.

Here are my system specs:
MSI MS-9802 - Mini-ITX board
  • CPU: VIA C7 1GHz
  • Chipset: VIA CX700M
  • Memory: 1x 240pin DDR2-533/400 DIMM, Max Capacity 2GB
  • Audio: Realtek ALC888 7.1-Channel Audio CODEC
  • Video: VIA UniChrome Pro II 3D/2D AGP Graphics Controller, w/ MPEG-2/4 and WMV9 Accelerator
  • LAN: 2x Realtek RTL8110SC 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Controllers
(1) 2GB DDR2-533 RAM (Super Talent)
(1) 8GB Compact Flash Card (Super Talent)
(1) 2 port PCI SATA controller
(3) Seagate ST3750640AS 750GB SATA2 Hard Drive

If the system isn't going to work for a dedicated Core, I'll probably just go with FreeNAS then hook that up to a Core I'll build later.

Hi... your problem is that the CX700M is not fully supported out of the box so to speak. Do a search on Unichrome & Via here on the forum for more info. I would suggest the best strategy would be to use your Via board as a NAS (FreeNAS would be fine for that) and then build a Hybrid/Core using one of the motherboards discussed on the Wiki or here that people have working. That could be an AMD with onboard nVidia or an Intel/AMD with a plugin nVidia 6200 card. Look for threads on those topics for more info.

8GB is probably to small, I reckon you'll need at least 12 maybe even more.
