What's the difference between the following Hauppauge models?
« on: November 11, 2007, 05:37:54 am »

I'm about to go out and buy a digital TV card (for use in Australia) and was going to get the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1110.  Searching the web I am struggling to find this product in Australia.

I can get the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1110MCE model, but have no idea what the difference between the two is..... other than the MCE model being OEM.

Will the MCE version work or should I keep searching for the non-MCE version?

Hi Steve,

I have no direct experience with this card... so I cant say for sure what difference is between the two versions. Youe can look here for more linux specific info on the card though http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-HVR-1110

Looks like the current 2.6.20-15 kernel has support for it though... you may have to get the firmware though as that does not seem to be in
/lib/firmware/2.6.20-15-generic/

If your just looking for DVB-T though you could also look at the Avermedia 771 PCI card (that needs a module modprobed into place) or the Hauppauge T500 (twin tuner card... you'll need the firmware for this card too... which I can send to you if you need it).

Another option would be the Avermedia A800 usb... but this is an external usb device. This is plug n play though so no config at all.

Hope the above is of some help.

I have the "regular" version, but I have no idea what the difference would be with the MCE version.  Doesn't the hauppauge site have information on that?  The difference is likely just the options that are included.

I started out with putting the firmware in /lib/firmware (see also the "history" of that page) but I noticed it wasn't being loaded at all (by looking at dmesg) and it seems to work fine without, so I took that part out.  If someone could confirm or deny that it isn't needed I'll be perfectly happy to update the page accordingly.

My understanding is that this card does need firmware for the demodulator... at least that is whats documented. But on the other hand if you have it working without then that can't be the case ;-)

The AVerTV DVB-T 777 (A16AR) looks like the best card as it has HDTV 1080i which is ideally what I want since I have a 50" plasma to connect up to the MD.

thanks for the tip on the AVerTV cards.... just have to find one in OZ now.

Yes the 777 card looks to be a good choice :-)
