smoke detector -> email notification
« on: October 24, 2007, 03:21:01 am »
I am looking for a little advice from someone with experience using LinuxMCE. I have Kidde smoke and CO detectors wired in an interconnect fashion. I also have a relay from Kidde that I can also attach in the string of interconnect alarms. I would like to have this relay trigger an event that would generate an email if the alarms go off. My question is can I use LinuxMCE to monitor a serial port on a PC and then generate an email? If it can be done, my next question is how?

Yes, Serial Devices are implemented via the Generic Serial Driver (GSD).. I Would suggest searching the WIKI for this term. It involves creating a new device template for your device, and implementing the commands it needs.

I wish it were that simple. I don't have a serial device. This relay which I may or may not use, is designed to turn on 120v device. I really haven't looked at it that closely. I was hoping someone has intergrated interconnected smoke detectors already. failing that I guess I need to create a serial device, some how.

You could use a gc100-12 with a sensor for contact-closure or voltage (will need a small adapter for use with 120 volt though).

EDIT:

You don't specificly need the gc100-12 model unless you want/need relay outputs, all the gc100 models have 3 inputs though, I just got confused for a minute there.

try looking into the Global-Cache GC100 interface, some of the models have relay terminals on them.

Luckily we even came up with the same answer.  8)
