Fileserver added & Videolan not installing
« on: October 22, 2007, 09:37:19 am »
Hello Everyone

I would just like to say how excited I am about this project and how happy I will be when I can rid myself of XP Media Center. But.... I have a couple of issues that I hope someone will be able to help me solve.

Here goes...

I have installed LinuxMCE using the 2 CD method, straight on top of a fresh Kubuntu install.
My Core is a Hybrid, with 2 MD's (details below)

1st Problem:

When the system is installed and after waiting several hours for the updates to come through and install, I then setup an MD for the 1st time and everything installs well but I keep getting a "5854 Done with new Device, Fileserver added: Generic PC as MD" (the 5854 number increases each time it shows on the screen, and this is happening every couple of minutes without fail. This shows on the Hybrid and on the 1st MD. This didn't happen before the 4 updates were installed. I then boot up a 2nd MD and the same thing happens on all the machines. It doesn't matter what UI I have, the message still appears on each screen at the same time.

2nd Problem:
Pluto VideoLan, if I enable the software on the Core and the MD's I see the Downloading Pluto VideoLan Server, plugin, client etc but it fails to download. After a while it pops up a failed to download message. When the orbiter loads, a message that says something along the lines of "There are some devices on this media director that did not start correctly...."
If I load up KDE on the Core and check under the multimedia menu I can see that "VLC Media Player" is there and it loads. But on MCE it definitely does not work as I have tried the follow me feature and I can only show the media on one MD at a time. BTW this problem existed for me even before the updates.

I have reinstalled and reinstalled this system time and time again (the MD5 hashes are fine)

Any help with be most welcome

Core/Hybrid System
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
4GB Ram
AMD X2 4200+ Proc
8x 500GB SATA using a PCIe Areca Raid Controller
PCI Cirrus VGA Graphics card (don't need fancy graphics on this core)

1st MD
Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
AMD X2 4200+ Proc
2Gig Ram
Nvidia 6600GT PCIe Graphics

2nd MD
Acer Travelmate Laptop 3012WTMi

many thanks,

Has nobody ever got these "Fileserver added" messages on there system ? Its driving me mad.

for what its worth, I have just tried the DVD iso and get the same result once the updates have been applied.

Is there something that I am missing here ?

Anybody ?

The notifications does go away after a while, but we are not talking minutes.
LMCE maps the system continously and any change is flagged.
Only when every Laptop and share in the house has been mapped and LMCE is informed what to do with them ('ignore this time' only makes the message reappear later).
For me that process took the better part of the week with the LMCE core on 24/7 (as it should be).
But then suddenly the messages were gone.
Also the ones that seems to show already mapped devices

Every Two minutes, it pops up on both displays "done with new device fileserver added: fiirestation"

I'm getting this message and it's very annoying especially as there is no hard drive in the fiire station.

Is there a way of stopping this report ?

Yes, in 710 it is, they did fix it earlier for 704 as well, but there seems to be something that causes them to pop back up (for some).
I don't recall the reason now

Under lmce-0704 you will see these status messages in the top left hand corner of every Orbiter screen. This has been fixed in the next release lmce-0710 in two ways;

1. The volume of these messages is inflated by some devices incorrectly... these devices have been fixed.
2. There is a 'filter' setting in the Orbiter that allows you to 'Turn off' all messages, 'Display' only essential messages or 'Show all' messages.

Hi Zafari,

Well under lmce-0704 VLC is broken when selected from Web Admin. I would leave it un-ticked in Web Admin's Wizard -> Devices -> Media Directors -> your MD Software Modules (and leave Xine selected).

To make media play on multiple MD concurrently just set some Media playing. Then go to the Media Floorplan in the Orbiter, high light the playing Media in the Media list, then click on each Media Director in the Media Director list and the media will  stream to all selected Media Directors concurrently. This works well for DVD's (you may need to use chapter change a few times to get them all in sync) and slightly less well for CD's or ripped Audio in that the first track in your Audio track list will play fine but when the next track is commences playing the Media Plugin gets confused and playback will fail after a few seconds. This last problem is being worked on now and should be fixed in the LMCE-0710 ;-)

Anyway hope the above helps you

Andrew

Hmmm... sorry just spotted a mistake in my earlier post above;

you actually need to select the the Media Directors first then select the Media you want to stream to them from the Media List.

Hi Andrew

Thanks for the info, my Fileserver added count is now on +80k. I shall wait for the next release then blast the whole lot away and start from the beginning.

I know you said that VLC is broken under 704 but will it have been fixed in 710 ?

Regards,

Neil
