cannot login to kubuntu
« on: September 03, 2007, 09:52:18 pm »
I have had a "running" pluto system on my system. Never worked 100%.
So I was really happy to see some people started LINUX MCE, and I hope to get a better running linux MCE

I tried downloading the quick install DVD, I managed to get it after some time (not easy).
When installing the DVD, it hangs at some point when unpacking TAR files...tried 10x burned new dvd, did the md5 check etc...

gave up, So I downloaded the 2 cd's and kubuntu live 7.04.
When I boot from the Kubuntu cd it finaly shows a login screen. just before showing the login I see some final messages on the "terminal window" saying the user is unknown to underlying authenticiation module. After that is shows an error dialog on the desktop saying:Authenticating Kubuntu A critical error occured. please look at KDM's (i believe it says KDM..cannot read exactely it on my TV) logfile for more info or contact your administrator. If I click OK it comes up with a login screen.
I never created a user, cannot find a default password on the web.
Does someone know how I can proceed? and look at thelog-file?

I never had it hang while unpacking tar files... It kind of sounds like a hardware issue; have you checked your disk for bad sectors?

The default username/password is linuxmce/linuxmce

I think it's a bit odd that the Kubuntu live CD shows a login screen to begin with.

when you install with the cds....do you wipe the hard drive before, to get all the stuff from the dvd install off there?are you setting any partitions or just using the whole disk?

Thanks for your answers sofar.

I don't wipe the disk, pluto/Linux MCE is supposed to do that.
I don't even get to the point where kubuntu is being installed.
I saw some other forums mention there should not be a login screen with Kubuntu.
I will try to download the live iso again and re-install.
I will be back with the results...

i dont believe linuxmce will format the drive unless you use the DVD. it would just try to install over whats there. ive had the same problem with OSX86. id suggest you just format the disk and try the cds again. but do what you want.

I downloaded a new iso from another location (previous was Tiscali the Netherlands).
Now it is working OK, I did not erase anything. Kubuntu has partitioned the entire disk, it is still installing at this point.
Looks OK now...
