I am looking at implementing a solution with ClarkConnect as a residential gateway server and LinuxMCE as a media center/ server and home automation controller.

I suggest that since LinuceMCE runs on Kubuntu, that you implement the following functionality in it to make it the ultimate residential server:

Provides core server applications
- web, VPN, backup, file and print services...
Protects network and data
- antivirus, antispam, firewall, intrusion prevention...
Enforces Internet usage policies
- content filter, peer-to-peer filter, bandwidth manager...
Simplifies management and monitoring
- system monitoring, software updates, ...

Look at monowall, Pfsense, ebox, OpenVPN, etc.  All open source packages.

This would truly be a killer server.

Have you used LinuxMCE yet? Many of those features already exist... some on a default install... like web, file and print service , firewall, backup, and software updates. Honestly some of those are at the very core of what LinuxMCE is. The others can be installed after the fact...

RTFM!!!
