install fails - about to give up HELP

OK...  I've tried everyone method to get this package installed..

After finding out that linuxmce doesn't support the AMD64 build of Kubuntu I tried the DVD quick install.  I was able to get this to function to a degree but this install makes A LOT of assumptions about the network install.

I tried a number of the suggestions on reconfiguring my router to avoid problems with the DVD install to no avail.  I'm convinced that a large number of the issues that linuxmce is having is due to a failure to connect to the net during install - and I can't find a way to get linuxmce to do an upgrade AFTER I've done the install and clean up the network problems.

SO, I downloaded the I386 version of the Kubuntu 7.04 live CD and install accordingly...  I download the mce-installer_1.0.0-1_i386.deb and install that after rebooting, but not upgrading, Kubuntu.

I try and run the install but get a gksu error - fine, I manually install gksu.  Try running the install AGAIN and I get the password window, enter the password, then bupkus!

Try running the install from the command line and find that it's complaining about liboobs-1.so.2 missing.  Found a couple of fixes for this that say to do a soft link to a prior version but Kubuntu 7.04 DOESN'T have liboobs-1.so installed on the drive - anywhere!

Some other instructions suggest that ssh, vim, bind, samba.  Did this, ran the install via command line again only to have the same liboobs error crop up.

Figured, what the hell, I'll uograde Kubuntu - still bupkus!

Somwhere someone suggested to get the installer from the CD, but Kubunt won't allow the ISO image to be opened - defaults to being opened with K3B which wants to burn a CD...

My system is a Shuttle SN68SG2 with an AMD 64 X2 5600+ CPU and 2 GB of RAM.

HELP!  I really like the idea of behind this package and want to get it to work, but at this rate I'm about done.

That's funny, I have a working setup that doesn't contain any file named liboobs* at all, so I doubt that's really necessary.

Calm down, take a deep breath, let's try again.  First of all get rid of that mce-installer_1.0.0-1_i386.deb, it is an old version and will definately not work.

To get the right installer from the ISO, do the following on a (fresh) install of kubuntu 0704, in the directory where you placed the ISOs:

mkdir -pv mnt
sudo mount LinuxMCE_0704_CD1.iso mnt/ -o loop
sudo dpkg -i mnt/mce-installer_2.0.1-1_i386.deb
sudo umount mnt
rmdir -v mnt

After that the installer icon should pop up on your desktop.  With a bit of luck you won't be seeing anymore boobs 'till you put some porn on...  

The installer will also allow you to specify alternate network settings.  I have had one or two installs pauze halfway through because they lost the network for some reason, but after restarting the network while the installer was still running (/etc/init.d/networking restart iirc) it simply continued.

I'm actually quite surprised by all the problems I've had...

I've gotten a step closer after MUCH research.  The liboobs error will go away if you do:

apt-get -y install liboobs-1-3

Ran the installer again only to get another error about libvte.so.9 missing.  This was fixed by running:

apt-get -y install synaptic

I also installed beryl because I saw a reference to libvte in some searches, but the synaptic install really worked.

So now I got the installer up and running but now have to deal with some more errors.

It's been a long day...  It wasn't until after I re-ran the install that I noticed your instructions on how to mount the ISO...

In the process of doing that now - hope it works...

Well, clean install of Kubuntu...

Got the proper installer from the ISO image and ran it.  It asked if I wanted to use the NVidia driver so I said yes.  AY carumba!  System rebooted and then on reboot I got a black screen - no login, nada.  I couldn't even SSH into the box.

SO, doing the whole process over again (lost count how retries) and this time I will select the blue pill!

Did you try selecting other outputs with the 1-5 keys?  See also the AVWizard page. 

I don't have any experience with that nvidia driver, so I can't help you there.  And sometimes after an install it just takes a while for the system to set everything up.

Well I finally got it to work.  Next time I have to remember to copy all the ISOs to the HDD cause caching takes a LONG time...

I've got a working system not, but I'm back to having linuxmce not recognizing my WinTV PVR 350...  I think in a prior iteration I got MythTV to see it but LinuxMCE still wouldn't...

I read somewhere that the IVTV firmware needs to be updated so that's the next thing to check out 

This is such a cool package - I really want to get it to work.

Anyway, thanks to both of you for the help.  It's help like that that reaffirms my belief of 20+ years that some of the best tech help is online!

OK, so folks are probably tired of reading this thread `o mine....

I quite possibly may have this puppy working!

I installed the IVTV drivers - couldn't find the firmware because IVTV says see Hauppauge, Hauppauge says see IVTV...

Anyway, ran through the MythTV setup and added set the configuration.  The network settings in LinuxMCE were still using the damn internal alias of 192.168.1.80 instead of the IP assigned from my router's DHCP server so I edited the interface config via the control panel for LinuxMCE.  I also have to change the IPs in MythTV's setup too because mythtvfilldatabase wouldn't work properly because it couldn't find the master back end.

Also, I had to change the ownership on /home/public/data/videos to mythtv.mythtv because MythTV setup complained it could write to .test

Anyway, I still don't have my Win TV PVR 350 listed in the Wizard, but if I click on the TV button I get static. 

I think this is progress, but it's too damn late to hook up a cable to this and try it...

It would make me feel better if this capture card would be listed.  Also, even though I have complete program guide data in MythTV the wizard setup does not show ANY providers.

The saga hopefully is almost over.

Thank you for this wonderfully simple, yet basic knowledge required to install off of CDs 1 and 2. I only wish that someone had posted this terminal-based information earlier,  whether in these forums or over at the Wiki, I have spent nights trying to install 0704. DVD hang each and every time. Can install Kubuntu 0704 (Feisty Fawn) onto this computer, but had no clue how to get CDs 1 and 2 to work. Now I am on a mission. Thanks.

You're welcome, I guess most people just burn them to cd, but using the ISOs directly is faster I reckon (I even kept the kubuntu ISO around for that). 

I've added the instructions to the wiki as well, as there was no mention of burning the CDs, or how to mount the ISOs in another way.

Congratulations, glad to hear you got it going.  Just curious to know what you had to do in order to setup the PVR-350 in MythTV.

I downloaded and installed the appropriate ivtv driver for the kernel version of Kubuntu - though this might not have been necessary, but I don't want to experiment again   I looked at doing the firmware but ivtvdriver.org said to get it from hauppauge and hauppauge said get it from ivtvdriver.org...

Then basically I ran the backend MythTV setup.  Myth somehow knew about the PVR 350 and I just had to make a couple of changes, add my datadirect programming account info, etc...

I checked and these two entries aren't shown in the LinuxMCE setup wizard.

One thing I am noticing is that even though I've commented out any reference to the eth0:0 net interface MythTV still picks up the 192.168.1.80 IP which causes a connection problem to the backend...  I can get around this by running the MythtV backend setup, but this is a pain.

However, I am happy that it's running - the eth0:0 is something I can track down
