VDPAU audio video sync problems with ripped DVDs

In LMCE admin I went to Wizard->Devices->Media Directors and changed "hardware acceleration" from "xv" to "vdpau". I left the "video card" set to "standard" although I wonder if I should change it to "GeForce or TNT2". After reloading the router, I played a ripped DVD. The now audio lags behind the video by about 1/2 second. My hardware is listed with my signature below, and is fully compatible.
Seems like VDPAU is a worthwhile feature to enable. I understand it offloads much of the video load from the processor to the graphics chip (for GeForce 8400 or better). How can I bring the audio back in sync?
