Hardware/Virtualbox/Core
« on: May 03, 2011, 09:32:15 am »
Hello,

it's time for a new Core!  ;D

Currently my core runs very well on a Intel Atom D525 - not quite fast but very low power, which is very important because it's running 24/7. The main reason why i want a new Core is the ability to have full backups.
Last weekend i tried Virtualbox but the Atom don't have Virtualisation so it's very very slow. Unusable... So i need some advice on a cheab, low power CPU/Mainboard which does well with virtualisation. Is an AMD Athlon or Sempron fast enough? Or are there any other ideas how to full backup a running system?
I don't want to backup media because media is stored on an unRaid server.

thanks.

Hi Avajon,

Checkout Clonezilla which seems to be the preferred backup choice of many. Just image the drive and can be restored very quickly.

I've used Acronis True image up until recently which has been great. I could restore a full image backup in less than 15mins. It does not seem to work with 1004 for some reason so I'm going to start using clonezilla.

Downside unlike VM is that system has to be turned off to perform backup but pretty minor since pretty quick. Probably a lot less hassle than using VM.

Cheers,

yeah, i've looked at clonezilla a while before. But another big advantage of a VM is: i have a stable running 0810 system and a test 1004 version. When wife wants to watch a movie i can switch really fast between the two versions... :)

I would probably get me another Atom based system to use as a test bed. The fast switching still works :)

hmm. quite a good idea! i have to check if there is enough space for a second pc. I know the atom based system are very small, but the space in the closet is very very small... But the problem with this solution is: for a backup i have to power off the system and use clonezilla or something else.

I'd probably do a single clonezilla, and do regular rsync backups after that.
