Softsqueeze/md versus squeezebox duet
« on: January 29, 2011, 09:45:28 pm »
Hi all,

I had a core (mobo died so waiting for a new one) that stored all my audio files and was running as a DHCP only. (My videos are on a NAS running through popcorn hours)

I have 2 speakers wired outside and am now tossing up adding either a squeezebox duet/amp to power them versus an md/amp to power them.

Pros and Cons? Cost about the same?

SB:
Faster start up
Better stability/reliability/WAF

MD:
Allows other functions like TV
Requires boot up time

What does everyone think? If the MD really provides more then why do people get squeezebox duets/touches?
Possibly provides RS232 port to control amp

I have found adding a usb sound card to the core or MD and running squeezeslave works very well.

I have two outdoor audio zones using squeeze slave with the USB sound card and the AZ amp which auto senses the signal and turns itself on.

Thanks Tim.

I thought of that except the core was going to go in the pantry and the speakers are wired to the home theater where I have an amp capable of a/b.

There in lies the dilemma. I;m probably leaning towards the duet at this stage but....

Thanks Josh

Hi Josh,

As you've spotted SqueezeSlaves have to be hosted on a Core, MD or some other host system. So in your situation I would suggest the SB Receiver would be the best choice to drive Zone2 of your surround receiver as they do not need a host system just power and a WiFi connection (or wired).

All the best
