Hello all,

I need help setting up a home entertainment center.
I'd prefer to use linux (thus using this forum) for this setup.
I have experience with debian based systems, but I am not a linux expert.

What I want to achieve:
Have a central server that contains all multi-media files.
be able to connect a TV through the network and having access to the data on the server.
browsing the data with a remote control (no pda stuff).

Limitations:
I don't want to put a dummy pc between each tv and network port.

What I know so far:
I've googled the subject, and found several solutions for Video/audio over ethernet. but some articles are out-dated, some are to expensive, and others simple aren't clearly explained.

Hardware I currently have:
I have an old p4 system that I will be using with 160gb of diskspace and 768 memory. If I can get this working, I'll invest into something better/bigger.
I also have a 4-port Switch (needed to allow interactive TV), and a 4-port wireless Router (d-link) for my pc network.
I have a cat5e and cat6 utp cable sockets in walls around the house.

What can I do to accomplish this setup?
Thx for any advice.

This is a home automation project.
If you specificly want video/tv go for mythbuntu.

My intentions might not be very clear, but I want to have 1 central pc that contains all my media files, movies, series, music, etc
and I want to be able to connect my TV in my living room to that central pc, or media server.
but I also want to connect the TV in my bedroom, and the TV in the 2nd bedroom and if possible a radio etc...

so basicly I want to be able to stream my media to any of my TV's over the network.

I've been looking into UTP to HMDI solutions, but haven't come up with much.

I know that this is more of a hardware question then software, but I assumed that most of the people that use this distro, know something about the hardware setup as well.

I just hope someone can help me with this issue.

so anyone, thx in advance

There are HDMI -> UTP <- HDMI converteres. Use google, or use mythbuntu.
Specifically for video/tv/media etc.

Then you do not want LMCE.

I doubt that a Hybrid will run smoothly with that little memory.

Keep looking for a project/system/product that actually fulfills your demanding needs.
