Snapshot DVD or Network Install? Snapshots broken?
« on: April 29, 2010, 12:38:48 pm »
Hi!

Having utterly failed to get PXE to work, and screwed my core in the process, I decided to build from scratch. I downloaded the (THEN) latest snapshot (LinuxMCE-8.10-22889-i386.iso) and "burnt" it to a USB key. When I ran the "check CD for defects" I got 152 corrupt files.

My first thought was that it was either the USB process, or a corrupt download, but then I saw this message on another thread:
Did I mention that I get this error on the windows orbiter as well. I have tried almost every possible combination. I even went back and made sure to burn the DVD at 4x. I run the cd check on 0810beta 2 and it comes up with 152 files have errors.I tried to download another .iso and I get the same thing.
Not only the same error, but the same number of corrupt files!!

I re-tried with a "plain" Kibuntu 810 iso and it has installed fine.

So, I guess my first question is, "is there anything wrong with the current iso snapshots?"

Moving forward, if I use the network (web) install, will I end up at the same place as the latest snapshot should take me?

Thirdly, I have just found out that my isp (BT) has moved the goalposts and I now have a cap on download per month. I want to go for the option which will result in the least download from here on and certainly want to avoid repeated downloads of snapshot iso's just to see if I can find one that will work for me ;)

As always, Thanks in advance for any advice  :)
Paul

Whenever I "check CD for defects", I always get loads back regardless of the method used to download/burn it. That said, these "defects" have never caused me a problem.

Thanks for the input!

Unfortunately, when I tried, the Kubuntu install failed saying it couldn't read some of the files on the disk. (About 65% of the way through). I tried re-burning and no luck. As I said above, I then tried "Plain" Kubuntu and it worked like a charm, so I don't believe it is the fact that I'm using a USB memory stick....

I'll see if i can find the post.

if your iso image is 3.7 then its good
i would burn your image at a slower speed,  there is nothing wrong with the images unless they are 3.2 in size.

Thanks

Ahhh, but I'm not "Burning" it as such - I'm using a USB memory stick....

The DVD is a no go either. I have tried to install this eveyday for the last 3 weeks from the time I wake up @ 8:00am til I have to leave for work @ 4:00pm. and nothing has go me to a working hybrid or core for that matter. I just installed Kubuntu 0810 and tried the network install when I run ./mce-install.sh it finishes with error msg.
Code: [Select]
Errors where encountered while processing: Msttcorefonts      E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned error code (1)
root@ubuntu:/home/user/new-installer# An error (Exit code 100) occured during the last action    pluto-dcerouter

Please someone help me out with this the wife is getting pissed with amount of time spent working on this thing >:(

Ok,

I went with plain Kubuntu and then the network install and it now seems to be working

EXCEPT

I have to hold <shift> while it starts in order to get AVWizard to show. After a reboot, no GUI orbiter, but MDs boot ok now (:)) and I have a CLI. Since it's a dedicated core, I'm not too concerned :D
