You may get HD video if the cable tv IN is direct to the 5500 card.  If it does work. I would recommend a cable splitter to break out signal to your STB and the 5500

If you are NOT using an airial antenna, the setup will be different.  I would try taking your cable IN coax direct to the 5500 card.   You will not use the terrestrial modulation, but one of the cable ones.  Since I am not using cable tv, I cannot make further recommendations.

Google is your friend.  Any other dvb-t capture card will be set up in a similar manner...someone out there has got to be capturing 'some' of the cable channels.  I think local channels are NOT encrypted, but the others are.

Since the card is identified correctly, the next step is go move down to the menu item ' Video Sources'.  If you haven't already, create a 'new video source' .  Name it something descriptive.  Mine is 'LR Broadcast'.  The 'listing grabber' needs to be set to where your video source gets its data (schedules direct if you have an account,  transmitted guide only if your local stations broadcast program data, or no grabber if you don't want program data).
I don't alter anything else on this screen.

Next go to the menu item 'Input Connections'.  You should see at least one DVB entry for the 5500 card.  Select it and press enter to get the configuration screen.  You can modify the Input name and Display name.  The Video Source should be changed to the one you created earlier.  Now, if you will be using data from the local broadcasts, click 'scan for channels'.  A new screen will display. It should already be set to scan channels 2 thru 69 using Broadcast for frequency table and Terrestrial for modulation.  Click Next on lower right, and it should scan the channels and find your local stations.  If not, verify your antenna connection is good and another device can receive signal using it.

Reply back on results...

Disabling the screen saver kept the video on the screen but it would not stay 'full screen' .

Too bad Hulu desktop went away.

I'm trying to find less expensive alternatives to cable/satellite services, but it looks like many internet services don't play well with Linux systems (probably Microsoft manipulating content providers).

After fighting with flash/drm/silverlight and hulu not liking firefox on linux, I finally managed to watch a movie on Hulu.com on my MD.  Only problem is that after several minutes, the main orbiter screen displays and I have to maneuver back to firefox.  Is there something I can do to fix this?

I did try searching the forums, but I'm unable to search the right phrase to return something concerning this

I will in the next few days... I'll include the above mentioned files in /etc/mythtv from CORE and MD with explanation...and hopefully some screen captures.

Just a comment from above about Host and DBHostname,  on the core I can understand local host as value, but on MDs it must be dcerouter ( or else on mythtv-setup one gets the recurring language screen, or the mythtv-backend refuses to start)

Forgot something.  Once mythtv user uid and gid are changed, file ownerships will need to be fixed (in /etc/mythtv)...   maybe the mythtv user should be created ahead of the install of mythbackend

Hey guys,
I am not a programmer, but I am a problem solver.   The recent update messed up my 'tweak' on the mythtv files on my MD...   I can fix them in a few minutes, but I want to provide some feedback/input into getting it set to work correctly.

here is what I have figured out:
On the CORE, everything works great..   the /etc/mythtv/config.xml file and the /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt work great.
On the MD:  there are several things Ive noticed:
     1.    the user mythtv needs to have the same uid and gid as the CORE's mythtv user (because the home folder is a nfs mount from the core)
     2.    Each MD gets a unique <Password> in the /etc/mythtv/config.xml (by default on mythtv install i am assuming)  This <Password> can stay
what it is, but also needs to be the same as the DBPassword in the /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt file,   AND it needs to be the same password for
the mysql user mythtv@192.168.1.xx (MD iP address).
     3.    On any MD, the <Host> in /etc/mythtv/config.xml  and DBHostname in /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt NEEDS to be dcerouter

Note:  if the default password in /etc/mythtv/config.xml is used, it wont need to be changed in Mythtv Setup.

I can provide my files if anyone wants/needs to see them.

Hope this helps.

Hi Maverick.

On my core I can status the mythtv user by the command:

id mythtv

which returns
Code: [Select]
dcerouter_1047569:~# id mythtv
uid=124(mythtv) gid=129(mythtv) groups=129(mythtv),20(dialout),24(cdrom),29(audio),44(video),1001(public),10000(pluto_dennis)
dcerouter_1047569:~#

the same command on my MD would indicate mythtv user's uid=110, and gid some other number.

to make them the same,
on the MD i issued the command:

usermod -u xxx -g yyy     where xxx is the uid of mythtv on the core, and yyy is the gid of mythtv on the core.

it SHOULD take the command and re-issuing

id mythtv

on the MD should result in a match to the same command on the core.

Another thing I think i found is that when the mythtv user is created on the MD, a mythtv@% user is created in the mythconverg database on the core.  The password I believe is the original mythbackend password created on the MD (as seen in /etc/mythtv/config.xml  originally).

After running mythsetup on the MD, the config.xml file gets modified to match the same file on the core... the password that the MD mythtv user is trying to access the database is now wrong.    I changed the password in the mythconverg database (using mysql-workbench) to be the same password used by mysql user mythtv@localhost. (which should be the password listed in config.xml and mysql.txt)

I kept getting mysql.sock errors on the MD mythtv-backend... once I corrected the password, I got a working MythTV on my MD. (aside from fixing the settings for my capture card).

Hope this helps.

Dennis
