Yes, its fairly simple and even asks you during the installation if you want DHCP services on or off.

Well seth, you may have done it. I downloaded the i386 DVD and burned it, booted off it just now and can report that my onboard Nvidia video card is working right off the bat (GREAT sign). I am doing a complete installation right now and will report my findings...

Installation issues / Re: Unable to Install, tried EVERYTHING... HELP!

As far as the actual installation, I tell my BIOS to init the ATI PCI card FIRST, this allows me to see everything on screen and install with no problems, however I can just use UI1. Once I have a working machine via UI1 I can install the Nvidia driver, reconfigure X, reboot, disable the ATI card and from here I SHOULD get to see Kubuntu OR LinuxMCE wizard via my Nvidia, nothing appears. I have also reconfigured my xorg.conf.pluto.avwizardr file to reflect the nvidia driver.

My problem is not getting the actual distro installed, its getting it installed using Nvidia (if all I wanted was UI1 with the ATI I would be done).

I will give those steps a shot and see if they offer any different results.

!!If ANYONE could point me to a AMD64 Kubuntu 7.10 ISO that WORKS with the CD install please point me to it, the error I get while installing via CD appear to be an invalid CD ISO (MD5 checks out fine)

Also, is there a 'preffered' nvidia driver over nvidia-glx-new or the nvidia drivers located on the nvidia site for AMD64 ( I have tried both with 0 sucess)

Also Also, is there a better method to reconfiguring xorg.conf OTHER than use nvidia-xconfig?

Thanks!

Installation issues / Unable to Install, tried EVERYTHING... HELP!
« on: August 03, 2008, 12:15:07 am »
I have been at this for weeks, read all to forum and wiki pages and tried just about every combination of hardware and software changes to make this work but I still can't get a working LinuxMCE system on my computer. PLEASE HELP ME! :(

My Specs:
abit n76hd (onboard Nic 10/100000, onboard nvidia 8200gs with DVI, HDMI and VGA, onboard sound, etc etc) BIOS up to date
2.7 AMD X2 (dual core) 64 bit
4gb ram, 120gb IDE and 750 SATA, Hauppage150 tuner, Atheros Wifi 802.11g PCI card.
ATI Radeon PCI graphics card (256 or 512 dont know)
Nvidia 8500 GT PCI Express card

To preface this machine runs Vista, blech :( just fine with no problems. Kubuntu 8.04 works PERFECTLY on it with ALL onboard video, sound and nic operating perfectly. OSX86 Kalyway also works great as well if you are interested. I have tried MythTV and its various distrobutions but I really want the features and functions that MCE offers so begins my quest... Here is what I have done so far with the results I got:

1) Tried installing to the SATA (and IDE) drive via the downloaded (and MD5 checked) DVD iso burned at 1x with the onboard HDMI (and tested with DVI, VGA and DVI with VGA converter) my bios appears correctly and I am able to choose memory test (checks out fine) and select the install LinuxMCE AMD64 version, I select this and my screen goes dark, I have waited for <15 minutes and nothing ever appears on screen.

2)Installed the ATI PCI card, I am able to see the installation screen and can install to my IDE drive, SATA drive is not seen at all, DVD installs correctly and I am able to progress through the AV Wizard but I can only get UI1 to work. I install Nvidia drivers and reboot, AV Wizard never starts up again, X is unable to start message appears onscreen. Xorg.conf file checks out fine with no errors and nothing out of the ordinary that I could see.  This works, but I cannot see the new UI (becuase its ATI) nor does my onboard NIC, sound or of course Nvidia card work. Wifi card does work. Kubuntu 8.04 sees all my stuff fine so I believe this is due to a more updated kernel in the later version of Kubuntu. Closer, but disappointing...

3) Install Kubuntu 7.10 bare from kubuntu website. Again SATA drive, onboard NIC, sound and nvidia not recognized. Updated and installed nvidia drivers tested them rebooted and everything works. Downloaded (and MD5 checked) the AMD64 iso files from linuxmce.org as well as Kubuntu AMD64 7.10 iso (also MD5 checked). Tried installing via the CD, both LinuxMCE isos check out fine but the Kubuntu is unable to cache, I have tried Kubuntu 7.10 x86 and AMD64 versions with the same result. Perhaps there is a Installer approved 7.10 iso that someone could point me towards, I am downloading direct of the kubuntu website, wala wala washington USA ftp site.

4) Purchased a Nvidia 8500 GT PCI express card thinking that perhaps it wouldnt see the onboard but a external one would work better. Same results as #1 each way I try it. It should be noted that My abit motherboard and this card work together to provide better graphics support (I have tested with this function turned off and on in my bios). DVD installer goes to a black screen after I choose to install. Tested via the VGA and DVI port and with a DVI/VGA adapter.

I am confident I can get the onboard sound, nic and sata working once I actually have a usable system with the nvidia drivers. If ANYONE has any ideas or insight as to how I can get this running with UI2 through my nvidia onboard I would be most appreciative. Thanks!

So here is where I stand.

I have got the machine to see the Nvidia and the NIC with Kubuntu 7.10 (no updates, only compiled new kernel) everything works EXCEPT i cannot cache the Kubuntu installer CD during the CD install of LinuxMCE. I have tried with both a 2x burned CD and the MD5 checked ISO image, no luck. I then tried using the older kernel before updating and this didnt work either. I am not going to try to install via DVD again with the ATI card installed, once the install has finished I will install the nvidia drivers and try again...

6
Yes! a little.

I have updated the kernel to the latest version and it now sees my Nvidia AND network card fine. I have lost sound output though... odd.

I am now able to boot into kde from the nvidia, the problem I am having now is that the MCE installer wont cache the Kubuntu disk, I am trying to use the AMD64 version and it wont cache, the MD5 matches fine. I am downloading the x86 version to see if that caches any better...

I'm still at it though ;)

OK, after a couple more days of messing with it I have got a lot closer. I ditched the DVD install and went for a Kubuntu installation then installed the Nvidia drivers THEN installed MCE via the CD packages. I have yet to actually go through the entire processes but it is looking a lot better. Chalk one more up for installing via CD over DVD!

One last side note, and I hate it when people ask me about release dates... but any idea of a release schedule for a 8.04 Kubuntu LinuxMCE? (Last time Ill ask, I promise)

Ill write up an entire installation walkthrough once I am sure its working as expected.

Now I am trying to get the onboard Nvidia and NIC to work. I have ran through the instructions here:
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers#NVidia_Chipsets

and installed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.09-pkg2.run file.

I've ran through these steps already, which got me to the current driver I am using. I have also ran the command /usr/bin/pluto/RebootWithAVWizard.sh, the computer rebooted but again started the Linux MCE Launch Manager and never starts the AVWizard or the Orbiter.

apt-get update and apt-get install pluto-orbiter all return saying I have the latest version.

I am beginning to think it may have to do with the log that says 'Timeout waiting for device registration' just after it says 'Starting device 20 OnScreen Orbiter'. The orbiter and AVWizard came up fine with the ATI card, since I installed Nvidia drivers neither has worked.

I am going to try another bare install, this time instead of the LinuxMCE 64DVD I will install from Ubuntu 7.10 then install Nvidia then install LinuxMCE from CD ISO

9
Is there a command I should use to grab the 'linuxmce' nvidia drivers, other than the standard Linux compatible Nvidia drivers? It seems to load the Nvidia drives just fine, I can see the Launch Manager just fine, just never loads Pluto or AVWizard.

Ill try all your suggestions in the next 30 minutes and report back...

10
Ill give those commands a shot when I get home, I am trying not to do a full reinstall as I JUST got to this point. I really havent done anything extra to the install except for add the latest Nvidia drivers and reboot.

99% of these problems do not exist in Ubuntu 8.04 but happen a lot in Ubuntu 7.10 (better kernel and driver support), leading to my next question... when can we expect to see a newer lmce build?

11
more info:

In the log it says
'Starting device 20 OnScreen Orbiter' then
'Timeout waiting for device registration'

as though its not loading the orbiter at all, or the AV Wizard... any ideas?

12
I'm a bit closer now...

So I have now got the Nvidia working and displaying the LinuxMCE Launch Manager, via both VGA and DVI (no HDMI yet), however it goes through the launch manager setup and never launches the orbiter. I have gone to the Video tab and asked it to reboot and start the AV Wizard again but it never comes up, it just sits at the Launch manager!

I have tried manually opening the AVWizard in terminal using sudo -s /user/pluto/bin/AVWizard_Run.sh however it returns back a error in line 72 and will not launch.

Any ideas?

The MD5 sums all checked out for both the DVD and the CD images.

Last night I tried a couple new things with some better results; I plugged in an ATI PCI video cad and was able to then see the terminal commands needed during install, I was not able to install onto my SATA hard drive as it was not being seen by Ubuntu 7.10 (both Ubuntu LiveCD, Alternate and LinuxMCE 710, Ubuntu 8.04 was able to see it fine). I plugged in a old IDE drive and installed onto that for the time being.

Now if I boot the LinuxMCE Box I get signal through the ATI PCI card, but not through the Nvidia card... I can still see my bios through Nvidia, but as soon as it gets to where it would show to Kubuntu Logo and boot screen my screen goes blank.

I have tested this on a 17" CRT (VGA) , a 19" Gateway LCD (DVI + VGA and DVItoVGA Adapter) and a 32" Vizio (HDMI + VGA) same results every time.

Hello, I am desperately trying to get a LinuxMCE system up and running in my house and am having troubles in my first step. The system I am intending on installing on is a abit a-n78hd with an onboard GeForce 8200, 2g ram, 120 Sata. My problem is that I cannot get anything to display on screen during the AMD 64 710 DVD installation, I get the initial Kubuntu  sreen where I can choose 'Install LinuxMCE 0710 for AMD64', I see a couple of terminal commands and then my screen goes black. I have tested this on both an LCD display and a old CRT monitor with the same results, I have also tried on the VGA, DVI and HDMI ports, each with the same result. I have left it sit for 30-45 minutes ad nothing ever comes on screen.

Next I chose to try installing off an existing Kubuntu 7.10 installation, I have downloaded the ISO images, and got the LinuxMCE installer to appear on my dkestop, however when it comes to caching the LinuxMCE CD1 it gives a response back 'unable to cache lmce cd1' or something similar. I have tried it both with a CDR burned at 2x speed AND with the ISO image, both times 1 get the same response.

I have looked high and low for step by step inscructions for compiling from source, however I have only found references to comiling SVN once you have the actual mce system installed (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Building_From_Source)

CAN ANYONE HELP ME!??!

I have been unable to get this thing running and have been at it for 3 days, testing each way I can think. Anyone have an answer? Or better yet a way to install on Kubuntu 8.04?

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated!
