Nice setup instructions. They work nice.

One thing that bugs me is that after install, my network icon in the bar is gone. In that one there are the management for Wireless. So when installation is done, I specified it to connect to my wireless router and set it all, that is gone. And I cannot bring it up and choose my wireless network and specify authentication. Going under network part in system settings reveal that the settings I specified is altered by install. That bugs me a lot and need to be sorted out. That is NOT what I specified the install to do. I specified it to keep the settings for the wireless and use the ethernet card for other network.

So, how do I get my wireless controll back and the menu in the right down side of bar so I can choose wireless or wired config? Doesn't LMCE support wireless cards? Why did LMCE alter that and remove my wireless application?

When I now tried to alter the settings back and restarted, bootup stalls and a list appears with ypbind and .....

....
....
....

and so on... hmm... I am about to break apart. This is ridiculous..

Single NIC option would be nice. I have struggled with problems currently which I belive is related to the fact that I set first NIC to 192.168.1.150 and second to, at first, 192.168.80.*

That didn't go well at all with shares etc it seems. Discovered nothing, since all equipment is in fact on the 192.168.1 network.

Why is that?

I have a hardware firewall/router with NAT, built in DHCP etc. All computers get their info from it and communicate through that device. It is small, cheap to run energywize etc. If I would make LMCE the router with DHCP enabled I would have to move all exisiting equipment over to the other network, which isn't practical at all. They already have what they need and a firewall to protect them and gateway. It would toss out IP to any other device in the home, either through ethernet or aerial wireless.

Another thing is that one might not want all features of LMCE. My interest was media playback and connect shares to it from where it could store and get videos, pictures, music from, as well play dvd's and rip them over to harddrive, either localy or remote network shares. Also when I choosen a good tv card use its TV features and use it as a VCR. And that is it, for the time being.

I am not saying to just have 1 NIC installed. I am saying that the install should have option to configure it with just 1 NIC, either ethernet or wireless NIC and it could talk through that and not act as a router, but mainly as a media station.

I also think that this is the main features that most are interested in at the moment. Not many have a home security system, nor security cameras, and they do not have the need for voice mail, don't have lighting system etc. I am pretty sure that the media features are in mind at a huge % of the crowd.
And as it is now, I would, as a developer, concentrate on those areas. I hope noone take offense for me saying that. I am really excited about LMCE and it is a task developers shall have credit for, even if it is a bit messy and weird atm.

LMCE with just the media features and functions working alone kick Windows MCE in the nuts many times over to start with. So it would be no shame at all sort out the installation, media part and option as it as a media center for tv, video and musik to start with.

Further development.... no luck..

I set the second interface from 192.168.80.1 to 192.168.1.151 instead. Suddenly LMCE starts to autodetect the network devices. That is nice.
And it detects share and start asking me questions about them etc.

But after that and restart of LMCE router no files are detected etc.

So I take a stroll into  home and public dir and into the folder "other" in there.

There are red paths in there pointing towards /mnt/device/48  and so on.

When looking under /mnt/device it is PURE empty.. nothing there.. blank, nada, open space...

So I go.. hmm oki... that is not good.. So I try create a dir named 48 (to manually mount smb share to it)... sudo mkdir 48...

access denied: file or directory already exist.... (ffs?)

Obviously it had trouble with making that directory and mounting the smb share to it. It seems it has trouble doing so with all shares.

So.. hmm.. My only thought at this time is to make a dir under public and others and mount the share to it. I assume that will work, but it is not the way it is suppose to be =/

I set up a SMB and a NFS share on my Ubuntu 7.04 box I also have (in fact this one I am using now). I had the same error in LMCE1.1 beta with accessing the shares with that as well. It found the shares and LMCE asked me questions, but no files, media etc. in that share was shown at all.

Oh right. This I might google first. Nearly forgot. But I'll mention it anyway:

I also noticed this in my log file:

I slightly suspect it might have something to do with the fact that I have 3 network interfaces in this box. One is wireless which I disabled since I wanted to rule out any possible screw ups (on first install something stole the routers IP.. ha ha.. *whistle*)
Then I have a ethernet 10/100 full duplex card in it, think that was Eth0:0. Then a Eth0:1 is set for the 192.168.80 network (and I didn't intend to use internal since this box actually is just single and supose to just show media for now).

Could it be why through file manager in Kubuntu I can reach all my shares just fine, since it actually toss everything on the 192.168.1.150 interface, while LMCE manages to find shares etc. barely and then it is trying via the 192.168.80 and it doesn't quite work that way?

Does those with 1.1 beta 1 installed need to reinstall in order to get the beta 2 fixes etc? Or is that managed via repository and possible update functions in the LMCE Manager? Noticed it seemed to download a lot of files yesterday when I started it. But it might have been something else.

(I'm asking because I spent 3-4 days alone getting the 1.1 Beta Install working And I grew 10 years older in the process, ha ha.)

Another question is if kubuntu need to be installed cleanly in order for 1.1 Beta 2 to be applied or if it is possible to apply it over 1.1 Beta 1? (I just had to ask, even if something in me try to hold the action back and slapping me silly.. not sure why ).

So.. I finaly got LMCE 1.1 Beta working basically I can view my dvd's and avi files.. on the core media system...

But I can not get file list etc from my Argosy NetDisk. Basically it is a disk drive in a small case with 10/100 mbps ethernet interface with built in smb and ftp server along with user access security and so on.

I have followed the instructions on how to set up the share in LMCE. Also tried manually etc.

What happen is that when I add device and add it as file server it does discover the shares and ask me questions. It add the shares as well. But nothing come out from it. So the system can indeed access the file server/storage. It also keep it alive from going down into standby mode.

Then I discovered this in console:

CIFS VFS: Send Error in SETFSUnixInfo = -5

(What does that mean?)

I also checked under  /home/public/data/others and there is a red link by name "windows share: temp [35]"

The share I am testing on is indeed "temp"

That one points toward /mnt/device/35

But there are no "35" under /mnt/device/

Feels like I have tried everything, hmm..

Actually, it is a good rant; it does make a point. I am saying that because I have been trying to get exactly media part working for past 3-4 days now and failed. I spent only 1-2 days to get the video card right and get install going. And then when I installed I was following the instructions, which didn't say what to touch in the setup procedure, and restarted as instructed and got Orbital cannot connect to router. Now I am a tech guy and that didn't make sense to me.
Further on it messed with xorg.conf, even if I didn't do anything that should have to do with it.
I also tried to get it to access my little file storage netdisk over here for video files and nothing would show up. I went for the logs in the admin interface and it told me there wasn't any, at first. I never got any files to show up under video section from it. It discovered it and set the shares up, but no directories or files were shown. I fiddler around and suddenly the media director and core screen wouldn't show up. *shrug*
I solved orbital problem, by removing the room I added etc.

The installation clearly need to be easier. But the parts around it also need to be easier, which isn't in LMCE control, like drivers etc.
Still one have to remember that it is free, it is 1.0 or 1.1 beta etc.

But for commercial I think it has a bit to go still. But hey, that is why it is 1.1 beta after all, to adress problems and fix them and make them better in 1.1. I had a go at 1.0 and 1.1 feels like a HUGE improvement for sure still. It is on the right track clearly.

But as the original poster pointed out, why are the other devices there for security etc. My goal with LMCE was to provide my VERY nontechnical better half with a point click media solution so I could drop video content to file server and it would be easy for her to watch it (ok I admit, she is crazy after the Bones TV show episodes. You all know the demand our women put on us ).

But.. even if I have a headache, and generally irritated I am going to beat this! It will work dangit! ;P
At least I have something to do.. (it is the 8th time I install kubuntu 7.04 alone on 3 days no.. )

There is no bonus CD yet. I don't think the videos are made yet, and the text is for future versions.

For 3-4 days I now tried to get LMCE 1.0 and 1.1 working. Today I turned back to 1.0 since 1.1 obviously need a.. uhm few tweaks.. (actually a lot it seems). So.. 1.0 install finished, new GFX card and so on.. but no video.. hmm shares content doesn't show up.. hmm what is this...

So I fiddle around with the setup and now there is a text there telling that since I didn't install bonus CD, I won't see any video nor hear any sound... uhm.. so.. Why doesn't install instructions say anything about a freaking bonus CD? What is the Bonus CD? Does it come with Linux MCE? Is it Ubuntu Bonus CD? Is it a bonus CD I got from latest <insert silly magazine here>? What is it? Where do I get it? And why does my LMCE install now blink at startup between black and desktop?

I am going to go out on a walk and buy me some nice swedish snuff and deaggro. At least I forced a lot of new things about my systems

I had some issues with the old GTS card, so I went and bought a GeForce 6200 256 card instead. Installation worked like a charm, BUT it seemed there was problems showing video in areas. All I got was black squares and I looked through the posts and googled around and I could never figure out what was wrong. I assume 1.1 beta isn't quite operational yet so I abandoned 1.1 and currently installing 1.0 instead (on a 6.10 installation of course).

However I am curious what cause those black boxes. I read that installer had trouble with samba package, but also some other packages; maybe some package and module was left out?
I think I am better off waiting for 1.1 final before having another try, since I also had problem getting access to network storage via nfs. Nothing would show up even if there were tons of video files and directories in those shares. It never seemed to complain about authentication so I figure that was allright and something else wasn't syncing like it should.

I also figured out now why I couldn't install the nvidia-glx-legacy driver. It helps if the kubuntu repositories in sources.list are there and not the part which LMCE threw in
So now I could download the legacy drivers, which removed the nvidia-glx. Rebooted and KDE directly went to business. I am confident I am at least with least UI setting can be able to play some anime avi files etc, and have a look at the functions of LMCE 1.1 Beta, while I build my new htpc box with a lot more juice under the hood (and with a new good nvidia card. I dare no longer go buy ATI, since it is obvious ATI doesn't care even near what Nvidia does about the linux side, even if ATI made me happy for a long time on other OS.. ).

Though remains to be seen how it works. Started up LMCE now and it fiddles around with generating screens etc.

I love problems actually because one learn so much trying to solve it, just no only about the things in question. In windows one doesn't learn cat crap mostly because one aren't let under the hood to do stuff in full control. *hugs his linux boxes*

The problem after install is this:

API Mismatch: The kernel module has the version 1.0-7184, but this X module has the version 1.0-9631. Please make sure that the kernel module and all nvidia driver components have the same version

Looking at nvidias pages and what card support, it is the 1.0-7184 driver version that is correct, and belong to the nvidia-glx-legacy. Since this worked before LinuxMCE install it means that the install popped in the 1.0-9631 one for the X module?

Would a simple apt reinstall of the nvidia-glx-legacy package do the trick, where the X-module 1.0-9631 get replaced by 1.0-7184?

Just went through some hours of 1.1 Beta install.. phew. Anyway I earlier had a problem where install didn't want me to use nv driver with my Geforce2 GTS/Pro card. I managed to switch over to the propriatary and get KDE working and I could go on with install.

Then I rebooted and to my surprise, KDE refuse to start. I check the log file and it tell me that the kernel module for nvidia driver got another version than the other one and that they have to match.

Now.. what in the freaking fracken hot duck had to mess with my drivers so that there is a version missmatch!?

This is starting to become a pain and I am stubborn.. a lot    ^^
Then again it is beta so I shouldn't really expect it to work like a charm.

But, I am a gnome user regularly. I turn to synaptic and search it a lot out of lazyness. With KDE I kinda miss that at a first glance and instead turn to usual apt-get and so on. So I am pretty confused what to do here.

How do I get the kernel module driver match with xorgs module it loads?

I went on anyway and ran the dpkg-reconfigure for the xserver and xorg, and reverted back to nv. So atm I am kicking LMCE up with those even if it complains just to see what happens

Any clues?

Edit: Still no luck. I got the nvidia-legacy drivers working perfectly before install of Linux MCE. Then when it is ready and rebooting, the KDE login screen aren't shown and it hangs with cursor in upper left corner.

I alt+F2 to console and check the Xorg log file and it tells me there is a mismatch of version between API Nvidia module and the Xserver module. So I was adviced to go into /etc/default/linux common etc and add "nvidia_legacy nvidia_new" to it.

Reboot and it still hangs, but this time the log file tell it failed to load Nvidia module and probe tell there is no nvidia in xorg.conf.

I lack important skills here, I think. I am pretty confused to say the least.

Oh I tried download the proprietary drivers from Nvidia and install them and started the install. It told it was missing kernel module and tried getting a possible build from nvidia, which failed. Then tried to build it and that also failed.

Might not be much info, but if there are specific info needed, ask me for it and I'll fix it almost in a flash (I think).

Edit:
It seems like LMCE doesn't do a good job changing xorg.conf. Instead, in my case with this GFX card, installed nvidia-glx-legacy drivers.
Then I changed via KDE settings panel the manufacturer and vendor to legacy, choose proprietary, and restarted the xserver.
Problem is that, those routines doesn't do a good job with the screen and monitor and it is set to 640x480 etc. That part is just either edit from own experience, or copy paste the large sections of 'Section "Montior" and 'Section "Screen" from old xorg config file (which one of course backuped before changing anything) to new xorg.conf.
Then restart xserver again. When starting Xserver a quick nvidia logo should be shown on the whole screen before login screen pops up.

Might be ghetto version to do it since I am just semi experienced Linux user that used to do slakware around 1993/94 (and a lot have changed since then), but it works and LMCE1.1 install didn't bugg me about driver change now. Just remain to be seen how the rest of the installation goes

Hi lads and ladettes!

I have a problem installing Linux MCE 1.1 Beta. Maybe it is my own fault for bringing it towards this somewhat old 1 ghz 1 gig ram box over here with a Asus V7700 Geforce 2 Pro card, but shame on me for not trying. It isn't a bad card actually, just a couple years old.

Anyway, this is what I have done:

Installed Kubuntu 7.04. Worked like a charm I might add.
NOT updated anything.
Burned the ISO's of Package and Cache CD.
Running the install script and got install icon on desktop.

So far so good

Then I started the install. I was asked if this was going to be used as media player or core.
I choose the first option here (I got experience from same box trying to install 1.0 on Ubuntu 6.10 whole last day before gave up. Had major problem with orbital couldn't contact route etc.).

Then I was asked, and it is here where the juicy parts come, and informed that the current nvidia driver isn't working well. In fact it told me exactly this:

The open source nv driver doesn't work well.
Replace it with Nvidia's proprietary driver?

Yes, I want it installed
No, I want to use the open source driver without 3d acceleration.

I first took it for its word and picked yes. And then I was asked to reboot my system. So I did.

Happy as I was, turned to unhappy as I was when KDE said "up yours" to me with a black screen and a blinking cursor in the upper left corner.

And I waited... and I waited... then I hit ctrl+F1, logged in and copied xorg.conf.1 over xorg.conf and rebooted.

That did the trick entering KDE.

Now I started the install again and this time I choose No on the question. Something was obviously changed and I was asked to reboot again.

So I did.. and.. it was "up myself" again

Overwrote xorg.conf again and rebooted and sat there for a moment trying to figure out what to do. I should of course check the log file for xorg, but I am behind a couple hours sleep from yesterday and I tried go for the admin panel and try out different drivers.. which of course failed on me the same way after I changed them.

So I came here.. and joined the party thinking I might ask for help or get some clues from other people that might had same experience or know someone with similiar or same experience.

If possible I will try edit in the log information from the failing startups in a bit.

Question is what I do now. Asus V7700 Pro does have a Geforce 2 GTS GPU and it should work with that driver.
I will keep on testing and fiddling around with xorg.conf. I still think it is strange that even if I told it to leave driver and etc. alone it had to mess with it and corrupt/prevent KDE from starting up.
