you could start by disabling onboard sound in the bios and making sure the usb one has drivers for linux.

if you do option 1, you can use the external ip that linuxmce gets from your router to vnc in. you will have to have the firewall either turned off or set to allow vnc to pass through though.

have you checked to make sure the SATA HD is plugged into the right SATA port? sorry...just makin sure. Or by "no boot" did you mean black screen after kubuntu splash screen?

you can make an iso from the dvd you have. also...it has to be kubuntu.

i think (it has been a while though) that the problem with SATA was mixing SATA and PATA (IDE) stuff. also...just to check....did you check the md5 on both the dvd and iso?

the PoE will not leave a darker screen no matter which type (cisco or IEEE). cisco claims that both will work with the phone, but i tried a cisco injector and could not get the phone to work. i used the IEEE standard one from sonicwall and it worked fine. you could try an IEEE standard injector and see if the screen is bright enough for you.
