Help Wanted / $75.00 for Caddx NX-6 integration
« on: March 31, 2008, 04:45:25 am »
Hi LinuxMCE users / developers,

I've been perusing the LinuxMCE site for about 9 months now, and I really like what I see. It is an awesome idea with even better implementation. I don't need to tell anyone that LinuxMCE has come a long way since the original release - it shows. The one issue I grapple with is the integration with an alarm system. I see not one successful case of an alarm integrated into LinuxMCE; only lots of references to "compatible" alarms not working as they should. I've seen a reference in the forums that this may be because the original Pluto code was rewritten and in that process the old drivers were no longer functional. Now, I know there have been arguments for "Why have an alarm at all when LinuxMCE can function as one?" Well, that question has been answered in length on the forums already, but the gist of it is that I already have the Caddx NX-6 installed and working, it is supposedly listed on the compatible hardware list, all the wiring and keypads are installed an working, and it is more reliable in the "mission critical" sense of the word. I have not setup a LinuxMCE system yet as I am waiting for the alarm panel integration to work properly - and as the NX-6 is in the same product line as the even more popular NX-8E, I assume (perhaps incorrectly?) that they would have the same "serial instruction set." The NX-6 does require the use of an additional add-in card to get the serial port, but this should not be a problem. I am also under the assumption that provided there is a serial connection to the core, a "Generic" driver can be used with the appropriate instruction set for the panel. This is where I believe everything falls apart...am I correct? Does this not exist?

The long and the short is that I am willing to pay $75.00 to anyone who can get the NX-6 to work with LinuxMCE - the definition being:
  • Arming / Disarming from orbiters & MDs
  • Using the alarm sensors to trigger scenarios / events in LinuxMCE
  • Notification to LinuxMCE of alarm being tripped

I, having really no programming background - only coming from a hobbyist's point of view, have really no idea what this entails from a coding perspective. If $75 is too low, let me know.

What surprises me even more is that although on the promotional video it mentions new Alarm panels being supported, I can find no record of this - or any successful alarm integration, on the forum or wiki. Even if SOMEONE were to answer the (seemingly?) simple question, of "What alarm panel works with LinuxMCE," it would make my day.

I realize this may not be top priority for developers, as it is not  listed in the roadmap, but nonetheless is an undeniably important feature. The closest I could find is "http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Development_status_for_all_modules," but I don't know how up-to-date this is (at least for the "security" portion).

Thanks to everyone involved in the development for this wonderful piece of software with a bright future.
