works for me

Your setup is actually very very similar to how I am going to be setting mine up. Thanks for showing me!

So do I need to order the GC100 and the GC-sc1? If not how does the GC100 connect directly to the existing board and is there any way to make sure its going to work? lol

Installation issues / Netboot error
« on: October 21, 2011, 03:23:05 pm »
Hi guys,

I am trying to get a netboot running on my laptop from my core. I read that I need to run the setup file from my core:  /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh but about halfway through the setup it gets an endless error saying

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
pluto-mythtv-player: PreDepends: mythtv-backend but it is not going to be installed
PreDepends: mythtv-frontend but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
#### Package pluto-mythtv-player failed (/tmp/tmp.lFSpF13245) - We wait 10sec and try again - to stop retrying press Ctrl-C.

The wiki-link about this issues says that it is outdated, anyone know how to solve this?

Your alarm panels most likely send a voltage down the wire to the sensor and then back to the panel.  Somewhere in that line (ideally at the sensor) is a resistor that alters the signal in a way that is recognizable to your panel.  If there is a line break, or the resistor gets damaged, or the sensor is tripped (technically also a line break), the alarm is tripped.  So if you want to use the GC-100, you'll need to program it to do that.

There are other forums around that are dedicated to DIY security alarm systems, filled with folks in your situation (old alarm system, trying to convert to diy).  They may be able to give you a leg up on voltages, resistors, manuals, potential interfaces, documentation, etc.  Good luck.

Bryce

Thanks Brake!

i will probably have to go that route, I want to be positive that i can make it work with the system before i start buying equipment. I have read on other forums that the sensors are compatible with other systems which makes me think that linuxmce integration is at least feasible. How I dont know yet lol.

Good call! Is it alright to use a second switch in the bedroom? Can you use two switches off of the same router?

I take that back! There is a ethernet cable on the board that is hard wired, if I plug my computer into is there an access ip to get to the board??

I dont think it has a way to plug any cat5e into it... still trying to figure out how to rig that up on the other thread.

Were on a slab and no basement, so im currently looking at running the wires under the carpet in our living room. Here my network at the moment:

Living room: Phonejack>50ft phoneline along baseboard>DSL Modem>Wireless Router=cat5 cables to= Xbox 360 + TV receiver.
Master Bedroom downstairs: Laptop connected to 47" LCD via HDMI. Currently wireless.
Upstairs: 2 bedrooms both desktops connected wireless. These can stay wireless as we wont be doing any streaming to them.

We have a rarely used coat closet with a shelf in the living room and ideally I would like to move the Hybrid Dell Precision 470 into that closet along with the router and modem then run some flat style cat5e cables from the router to the other side of the room where the tv is. There I will use a network switch to connect the xbox 360 and run a second cat5e cable from the switch to where the living room HP DC5750 will be. I need this one to have some flexibility because during xmas time we will have to move this box around a little. There will also be a long flat HDMI cable to the tv from this box.

Man I wish I could post freaking pictures, it would make this WAY easier to explain!

Anyway, Back at the router in the closet...

Another flat CAT5e cable will fish underneath the carpet and to the back of the house where the master bedroom is. Our carpet is totally shitty and has no padding or anything its straight to the concrete which makes it easy to maneuver around.

I was thinking something along the lines of disconnecting the sensors from the alarm panel at the alarm panel, throwing away the panel, and running those cables into a GC-100 or somesuch. I imagine the sensors are providing a binary signal of some sort. That way you don't have to rewire the house for all your window/door sensors. Just need to figure out what signalling system the sensors are using and how to capture it.

Sounds logical but how do i know whats going to work with the system? Is there a certain style of cable connection to look for or what?

Thats what I was afraid of and could potentially derail my whole intentions... unless there is an easy way to run Cat5e cables with existing walls!

Hi all!

Im setting up my system for the first time and there is so much to take in that Im getting a little lost on some hardware configurations. I have three computers that I want to implement:

Hybrid: Dell Precision 470 Workstation with X2 Dual Core Xeon 3.0Ghz processors and two 1Tb HDD's
Extender 1 for our living room: HP DC5750 with single core AMD 64 2.9Ghz (might upgrade this to a dual 3.0Ghz) wanted to run the security system from this box, or does EVERYTHING have to be done from the Hybrid?
Extender 2 for bedroom: HP Laptop with HDMI out.

We will be using our cell phones as orbitors. Her Iphone and my Android Galaxy S

So some of my concerns are that currently all of these devices are run from our wireless N router. In setting this up is it a requirement that everything be connected via actual ethernet? I noticed that a lot of people are using switches too but it seems my system is going to be tame compared to some others so I dont know if thats necessary. If wireless is ok, can the core use the wireless adapter and the ethernet adapter as the two required adapters for the system? Also for netbooting the two satellite computers, can this be done wirelessly?

My main uses are going to be for media (obviously) and to control our security system (figuring out in different thread) and probably lights using the X-10 system as it seems the most easy to implement.

Any help would be excellent as I keep studying all this :D

Im also thinking about going the x-10 route for lights, it appears to be the easiest to implement.

(why the hell cannot i post links??)

As far as I understand everything is hard wired including our smoke detectors which dont work at the moment because the system is offline!

How do I know what will work with the GC-100? I looked at a few on ebay and it appears that they all use IR inputs but how do i know that the components that I have will be compatible?

Users / Question about existing security components and LinuxMCE
« on: October 19, 2011, 05:07:11 am »
Hi all!

Im interested in slowly starting to incorporate LinuxMCE into my home and it is all very overwhelming to but I have been absorbing as much info as I can on the subject. Anyway, Im most interested in the home security features of MCE and how it works with my existing system. We bought our house 2 years ago and the previous owners had a Brinks BHS-3000c system installed but since I have no desire to pay brinks to monitor our house, I want to set it up myself. As it is now, the system has been unplugged for two years and I have no way to overide the master code to use the system in its current state. From what I have read I need an orbiter to make my existing door and window alarms, etc to work with MCE but how do I do that with a hardwired security system? How do I plug my existing board into MCE?
