Your alarm panels most likely send a voltage down the wire to the sensor and then back to the panel. Somewhere in that line (ideally at the sensor) is a resistor that alters the signal in a way that is recognizable to your panel. If there is a line break, or the resistor gets damaged, or the sensor is tripped (technically also a line break), the alarm is tripped. So if you want to use the GC-100, you'll need to program it to do that.
There are other forums around that are dedicated to DIY security alarm systems, filled with folks in your situation (old alarm system, trying to convert to diy). They may be able to give you a leg up on voltages, resistors, manuals, potential interfaces, documentation, etc. Good luck.

That will likely be Redbox's next big move, with the mass-market adoptation of usb 3.0. Except instead of a time-limited disc, it'll be a time-limited usb flash drive. The alleged transfer time for a 50GB movie is supposed to be ~90 sec.

I'm curious: by any chance was it GE "Smart Remote +" equipment or was it z-wave? The reason I ask is because radioshack.com doesn't have any z-wave items, and the couple radio shacks I just called in SW Michigan had never heard of z-wave (one helpful Chris actually walked around the store looking at clearance items to see if any z-wave might be found).
Could be regional, I suppose.

One week. Wow. I'm pretty conflicted. Part of me wants to encourage you to stick with it, because Andrew and his crew know what they're doing. I am floored with the level of professionalism, friendliness, and the immense amount of assistance I've received from them getting my NC300 up and running. But you should know, one week is hardly a wet toe when it comes to swimming with lmce.
The other part of me feels a bit resigned that if you couldn't make it much more than one week without giving up, especially at the £1500 level of commitment, you probably don't have enough patience for this system. In no way should that be taken to disparage Dianemo, nor am I trying to verbally abuse you. That's just the nature of what things are.
The main benefits that I see to a Dianemo system are these:

I got this message this morning, too. Last night I added a new D-Link WAP, and of course, it picked up my Dell laptop with a webcam.
This morning it kept popping up, like every minute or two (I was clicking ignore once). So I turned off the Dell. That stopped the messages. Turned the Dell back on (webcam disabled) and the message came within seconds. So I clicked ignore forever.
So, at least for me, it was the Dell laptop, not the D-Link WAP.

HAI parts are available online, but so far I have not been able to find any DIY installation support (official or unofficial). If you already have an HAI system installed in your home, you should be set. If you want to put it in yourself...well, let us know if and how you succeed.
I agree with you that ELK looks like a better fit. It has a robust DIY support/installation community, and the parts are significantly cheaper. But I personally don't have the programming chops to pull it off. If you've been able to get an lmce810 hybrid and MD system up and running without a single post to the boards, then there's a good chance you do. If you're up for it, your programming choices are C++ or Ruby. Search the boards and the wiki for more guidance, but here's a start:

Anybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but: Yes 8.10 is still in beta and wasn't released. 10.04 is undergoing the initial stages of development for two reasons:
- There's a massive effort underway to use 10.04 to go completely to the GPL and get completely away from the PPL.
- 10.04 is a long-term-supported release, so the odds go up dramatically that lmce 10.04 will be released before Ubuntu support stops. This is in no way a knock against any of the developers, or their commitment to the project.
I believe I've also seen reference to the possibility that starting from 10.04, it will be easier to update lmce as new Ubuntu releases come out, such that there shouldn't be such a lag between Ubuntu releases and lmce releases.
Having said all that, 10.04 is not for the faint of heart, and would probably be best described as pre-alpha at this point. Also, 8.10 continues to be developed, with a new snapshot having been uploaded this morning.
