Users / DVD player for mini-itx MD
« on: December 28, 2010, 01:28:02 pm »
Good Morning

I'm getting ready to hook up the bedroom tv with a MD.  The tv is an LCD with all cables hidden in the wall.  SWMBO would like to occasionally watch DVDs on this tv.  For aesthetics, this DVD player needs to be either part of the mini-itx case or a small USB slot-load dvd player that will also hide behind the tv.  I would mount either solution such that the DVDs would be loaded towards one side of the tv.  So my questions:
  • Does anybody have a mini-itx build the includes a slot-load DVD player that works with lmce? or
  • Does anybody have an external USB slot-load DVD drive that works with lmce?

I don't have a preference, other than price.  I'd like to get the whole shebang setup for less than $400 ($300 would be awesome), and I'm fine with building my own system.  Just looking for component help.

Thanks
Bryce

Thanks for the answers.  I figured most others interested in Cascade would be interested in the answers so I put them as their own posting.  I apologize in advance for this next list of questions.  Feel free to take your time answering as there are a few more arcane ones in here.
  • Does Cascade support the Haupauge 1212?
  • Am I correct that the NC200R and the NC300 are solid cores, no hybrid function?
  • On at least one occasion, a reference is made to accessing Cascade through the internet.  Is DynamicDNS needed, or how is that handled?
  • I noticed that cameras were integrated into a Cascade system on Youtube.  Does Cascade support any alarm panels?
  • Along the same line, are smoke/heat detectors supported?
  • Are there certain cameras that are supported by Cascade, or any limitations on types/brands of cameras?
  • Same type of question on motion sensors?
  • Is there any sort of firewall filtering (ie: dansguardian or squid) implemented within Cascade?
  • Are phones implemented?  If so, any restrictions on VOIP carrier and/or hardware?  Currently I have ViaTalk.
  • Would Cascade use VOIP to call me during an alarm event?
  • Is fail2ban implemented in Cascade?
  • I see you have WebDT 362 listed as supported for orbiter.  Any word on WebDT 366?  I have one 366GX and two 366LXs.
  • I see many references to ZWave.  I thought I saw Insteon listed once, somewhere between the Cascade and Dianemo websites.  Are there issues with Insteon or is it fully supported?
  • Any projections about climate interaction?  I currently have Aprilaire components (thermostat, humidifier, external thermocouple).  Any ideas/comments?
  • Any ideas about supporting lawn irrigation?  I particularly like the idea of automatically turning on my sprinklers when some uninvited individual starts poking around my home in the middle of the night.
  • Is flash supported?
  • Is hulu supported?
  • Any support for any internet radio stations built into Cascade?

Thanks
Bryce

A few questions about the NerveCentres.

NC30
  • Will it be upgradeable to 10.04 when available?
  • How is it limited to up to 2 Media Managers?  Is it by on-board NICs?  Couldn't more than 2 be added by using a switch?
  • Similarly, how is it limited to 2 iPad/etc?  Why won't 3 or more work?

Are there any differences between the NC300 and the NC200R besides these:
  • 300 - standalone; 200R - rackmount
  • 200R - 7" LCD panel
  • 200R - bonus expansion pack (DVB kits or ZWave kit)

How much is shipping across the pond?
I've seen a few references to 7.10/8.10/9.10.  Which is the current standard for Cascade systems?

Thanks
Bryce

If there is enough interest I will post an image of what I have, but that should be reserved for another thread.

Good Morning

I've not had a chance to check this out yet, but it appears that these WebDT 366s from tbowland may support WPA/WPA2 encryption.  According to this and tbowland's original post in this thread, these WebDTs have an Intel 2200 Pro mini-pci card.  According to this, this card is supported by the Linux ipw2200 driver.  According to this, WPA and WPA2 work with ipw2200 drivers >= 1.0.2 using wpa_supplicant.

I just moved back into my house from a fire last fall, so it will be a looooooong time before I get a chance to look into this with any depth.  I did buy 2 of these WebDTs from tbowland, so I will look into this in a couple months if nobody else has before then.  Just thought I'd throw this nugget out there if somebody else is interested.

As a side note, not that it matters to me or likely to many others around here, these WebDTs from tbowland do not come with an operating system.

As a second side note, WebDT owners should check out the webdt.org website.  Some interesting reading there, including mods to upgrade the internal flash IDE chip to 4 GB.  :o

A last side note, just in case anybody else is wondering why these say "Ambia" in the corner.

Users / to 56kHz or not to 56kHz?
« on: September 30, 2010, 05:56:48 pm »
Good Morning

I've been looking over my components' documentation, and I can't figure out if I need the 56kHz add-on for the USB-UIRT.  Are there any guidelines (ie: you need it if you're in the UK, or if you're trying to control a cable box, or if you have a Samsung anything.)?  Or is it just a matter of some things need it, some don't, so the cautious person buys it with the upgrade rather than buy it without and risk having to upgrade?

Lil' help?

Well, from a first glance, it's touted as essentially a Wii remote that works with Windows machines.  I believe we already have the Wii remote working with lmce.  And Wii remotes are $40 at your local "whatever" (no s/h).  I guess I don't see the draw.

Users / Is the VistaICM 'Armed-Stay' bug fixed?
« on: September 25, 2010, 01:49:12 pm »
Good Morning

I got a bead on a VistaICM.  I thought this was fully working, but looking back through the documentation on this, the wiki says:
Quote
When the panel is set to Armed - Stay the VistaICM does not send zone trigger information.

Does anybody know if this bug has been fixed yet?

Thanks

Users / 4 IR devices on one USB-UIRT

Has anybody used an emitter splitter with 2 dual emitters to get 4 components hooked up to one USB-UIRT?  I'm curious if it works okay, or if some sort of amplification will be needed.

I don't want to mess with your wiki table cuz it's so nice...but the HD-PVR doesn't have a TV tuner, just video & audio inputs.  From a nit-picky standpoint, it probably shouldn't say NTSC/ATSC, but from a practical standpoint it should be usable in all locations (Not just North America).  I'm not sure of the best way to modify the wiki table to reflect this.

A related question about the wiki entry: what is the meaning behind the star ratings?  Do they reflect abilities, ease of use, capture quality?

Awesome work on this.  Thanks for what you've done.
