Installation issues / Re: Wintv Hvr 950 not detected!
« on: January 19, 2008, 04:32:56 am »
I googled for you, check this site: http://www.fsckin.com/2007/11/26/hauppauge-wintv-hvr-950/

There are no articles in the wiki about Windows Mobile / Windows CE? Please help write one if you have the hardware.

Adding info to Controlling LinuxMCE would be a good place to start.

Don't be afraid to add stuff, any docs is better than no docs.

Hi.

Please help us improve the documentation, help write the wiki! I have added this answer to the wiki, but in the future please do it yourself. Don't be afraid to try to add stuff, any docs are better than nothing.

Its still a very new project - much work to do....

...have well seeded torrents of the DVD ISO
Did you download the torrent? If not, then you have your answer. If you did - are you still seeding? No one can change this except the downloaders.
No, it was too slow only got 20kbps after a few minutes, the europan CD mirrors were much faster.
In retrospect i regret not getting the DVD, i think it would have made my install easier and would have removed a few bullets from my list. I updated the download mirrors wikipage with this info.

...let me know that i needed Kubuntu 7.04 ISO to install, but crashed at end of install with an obscure error about DeCSS not installing.
Seems like two separate issues - don't understand the first. Yes you need an operating system is you are installing from CDs, the DVD is a bundle that includes the OS....?
The second sounds like you were trying to play a DVD and the dvdcss decryption library wasn't installed. This is normal and is a simple package to add, that can't be by default for legal reasons around copyprotection - its mentioned frequently in the wiki, but last I looked, was not something that jumped out at you unless you were looking for it!
Look at this thread to see what i mean.

...leave my network alone (it wants to be dhcp+dns+gateway on it's own network)
If you are setting up a standalone LMCE machine, this isn't relevant. It does nothing to your network, just turn off the DHCP if its on. If you are setting up an LMCE environment with MDs, then this is only relevant as it only applies to the internal network and doesn't touch your existing network - assuming that you set it up as described in the wiki and forums, with 2 NICs! Again, this is clearly described in the wiki, but it certainly could be placed more promonently for people just starting and looking for how to download, like with the DVD version scratching your whole HDD!
My cabling setup doesn't allow for LMCE to have 2 nic's in the way you describe. I don't even want LMCE to do all the plug&play i'm happy to tell it what devices there are but this seemed to cumbersome. I ended up setting up a new subnet with a static router on  my OpenWRT router.

My routers dhcp server wasn't able to ignore certain DHCP clients. I suppose i could block the dhcp traffic through a firewall though... Maybe i should try this and put in the wiki.

...give me the option to autodetect my monitor
That would be nice :) in fact a lot of things around displays and resolution would be nice soas to avoid modlines, etc!

...have a good weborbiter
Not played with it much, but looked OKish for a simple web product. Could certainly improve a lot with the discussion about UI3 going on at the moment

Sorry but it's a CRAP. When you enter text you have to click on an onscreen keyboard in an imagemap. And i have to wait for the page to load before i can enter the next character.

...use my network shares because they had spaces in them (DISK 1 and DISK 2)
This is a bug that has been fixed - get 0710beta2 or 3 in the next couple of days. If you're interested in the project improving, you should be using this anyway ;)  0704 is sooooo yesterday, as you say!
I would have liked to try 0710 but i was recommended to stick with 0704 if i wanted something that worked. Anyway considering the state 0704 is in what can i really expect from the development release.

The things i think need the most improvement is:
• Documentation. The wiki is good but more people need to make an effort to document it.
Agreed, lots of good info, but the structure isn't the best to ensure that you come across the important stuff as a newbie in the process of looking into LMCE or downloading.

• Getting errata and bugfixes out to the users. LMCE 0704 is quite old by now.

Also searching for issues in the forum gives me flamewars instead of help. Users asking about something and then getting bashed for not searching. Please improve the documentation, errata & bugfixes, it'll help get rid of stupid questions.

I hope this will be used as constructive criticism and used to improve future versions

To address your first question - if you just want live TV and PVR functionality, then yes, you have picked the wrong product. Go with Mythbuntu. Assuming you are in Europe, then another reason to use 0710 is that VDR can be chosen instead of Myth - it was designed for DVB which you are using, and so will integrate better.
Interesting.

...have a native Linux or OSX orbiter
That would be nice, at least a Linux one!
there is a native orbiter for linux.

I didn't spend much time looking for orbiters after i found the weborbiter, sorry if i missed it.
Is this the same oriber as is used on media directors? I assumed it was only usable as a media director but perhaps i'm wrong.

Users / Things that LinuxMCE didn't...

Hi! I was enticed by your LinuxMCE video, very pretty stuff. But after trying for several days of getting everything to which i've been mostly successefull with i'm ending up asking myself why i'm not just running MythTV instead.

http://www.mythtv.org/modules.php?name=MythFeatures

Turns out there's not that many must-have features LMCE has to make up for the effort and development time required to set it up.

LinuxMCE 0704 didn't...
...have European download mirrors for the 0704 DVD
...have well seeded torrents of the DVD ISO
...let me know that i needed Kubuntu 7.04 ISO to install, but crashed at end of install with an obscure error about DeCSS not installing.
...let me switch between dedicated MD/Kubuntu desktop (without searching the forums)
...leave my network alone (it wants to be dhcp+dns+gateway on it's own network)
...give me the option to autodetect my monitor
...have a good weborbiter
...have a native Linux or OSX orbiter
...use my network shares because they had spaces in them (DISK 1 and DISK 2)
...have an easy to use web admin
...recognize .mkv as video.
...recognize my remote (it gets handled as a keyboard through /dev/input)

and the last drop is that it won't detect my .mkv files to play HDTV movies from the network.

The things i think need the most improvement is:
• Documentation. The wiki is good but more people need to make an effort to document it.

Make sure you don't have spaces in the share names.

I'm a little confused about the Display settings.  I measured my screen and it's 50x24 1/4, so does that mean I set the display size to "1250 606.25".  That doesn't sound quite right.  Am I on the wrong path with this?

I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about, but FYI displays are measured in either/both their X/Y pixels (eg. 1366x768, 1972x1080) and their diagonal physical size, like 50" from bottom left corner to top right corner. Aspect ratios like 4:3 or 16:9 are derivable from the pixel dimensions, though some display modes will just not use some columns or rows of physically available pixels when an aspect ratio doesn't fit perfectly inside the pixels available.

He's talking about calculating the dots per inch to solve the microscopic fonts in KDE as described in the link above.

According to google (search for 50 inch to mm)
50 inch = 1 270 millimeters
(24 1/4) inch = 615.95 millimeters

So DisplaySize 1270 616 would be correct, which is roughly what you said.

Installation issues / Re: Can't get TV stream in remote Media Director
« on: January 15, 2008, 03:45:23 am »
Perhaps mythfrontend is trying to connect to the wrong IP. If the mythtv backend ip in MySQL is set to the internal IP and the computer you're running mythfrontend from.

The log output says it's trying to connect to 192.168.80.1:6543 . What's the IP of your computer?

Installation issues / Re: Can't change UI
« on: January 15, 2008, 03:09:54 am »
You can also change it in the admin.

Select Wizard > Devices > Orbiters and change the UI there.

However mine is not selectable, possibly because the graphics card isn't fully supported. (A new one is on the way).

Hello. I have the same issue. Where's the setting to change this?

Also installed LMCE 0704 from CD

Installation issues / Re: Installation fails - could not install LAME
« on: January 08, 2008, 01:49:07 am »
Hi,

I'm getting the exact same problem.

Code: [Select]
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
dpkg: Breaks: dpkg-dev (< 1.14.0) but 1.13.24ubuntu6 is to be installed
dpkg-dev: Depends: patch (>= 2.2-1) but it is not installable
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

ERROR : Could not install lame

Installing on 3 computers (bought some refurbished PCs), all have now failed twice at the end of the install with this error.  :-\

I'm installing with all 3 isos (Kubuntu + MCE CD 1 & 2) on desktop.

edit: This was due to using Kubuntu 7.10 CD when 7.04 was required. Most likely the original poster did the same mistake.

Kubuntu 7.04 is no longer available on www.kubuntu.org
